balanced inputs on audio gear are XLR style inputs - the same type of connectors used for low impedance microphones.....


they are called "balanced" because the + and - signal is carried on identical inner cables and the ground/shield is a third wire that is independent of the signal cables......


generally this type of connection/cables can help reduce noise over long distances.... (greater than 25 - 30 feet)....
