What are your favorite Speakers?

Do you have to own the speakers to respond? If not my favorite speaker is the Nautilus:

It sounds incredible. I will never be able to afford one, though, so it's a mute point. I eventually hope to buy the M&K 150 THX b/c I like Tripole surrounds:

I have a complete set of M&K 150 Speakers, the s150THX for the fronts (L,C,R) and two pairs of SS150THX tripoles for the side and rear. Side speakers are in dipole mode (for movies) and rear speakers are in direct radiating mode (for music). My Denon 5700 handles all the switching. I use an M&K MX350 subwoofer and have recently supplemented it with an SVS 16-46PC subwoofer for REALLY low energy (under 20Hz). The SVS subs are new on the market and, to me, represent a tremendous breakthrough in SW pricing.

I chose the M&K line because of the clarity of sound for theatrical presentations. Some say they are not musical enough for pure music applications and while I respect that opinion I do not necessarily share it.

Speakers are probably the most subjective component you will deal with. Different strokes for different folks. Lots of great options and choices. And some real dogs. But you'll probably hear about those, too.

Happy hunting.

I've just got to get a pair of Tannoy Churchills. But the price is a little steep. Maybe Santa can get 'em on the sleigh on his way through Canada...

I think I'm going to settle for some Tannoy Saturns. Great bass, clear mids and highs, and high spousal acceptance factor-- 97SAF...
Speakers are totally subjective. When I recently purchased my system I 1st listened to a modestly priced system, and it sounded very nice. I would have been very happy with it. Then the dealer said "come into the next room" and I heard a better system. It sounded great. There is practically no limit, but you really need to set a budget and ask "what are the best speakers within my price range?" BTW, I went a little beyond my budget because I just loved the sound of my Thiel CS2.3s with Powerpoint ceiling mounted surronds and SCS3 center with a B&W sub. For my installation, ceiling mounted surrounds were better than wall-mounted, and there are no better ceiling mounted speakers than these Thiels!
I like Thiels and B&Ws, too. Also, JM Labs. Aerials, Dynaudios, Quads and Dunlavy's also make me swoon. If you want to get exotic, I like the Sonus Faber Guarneri, but not the Amati.

But Wilson W/P 6s and Revel Salons are my full-range favorites.

And this is definitely an issue that ultimately comes down to personal preference.
I am new to HT and have been reading the posts on this forum for about a month. It seems that speaker preferences are based primarily on personal taste and secondly on specs. I am trying to compile a list of speakers that I should demo. Lets assume I go with the Lexicon MC-1 Pre/Pro and Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature amp. So, what are your favorite speakers and why?
Q,

you will want to pick your amplifier *after* you decide on speakers. All the brands mentioned are great- and there are even more. Obviously I have a bias- I should point out I have no affiliation with aerial acoustics aside from being a fan.

Q:

WOW! What a question to ask someone that loves and knows home theater. It would take me at least 2000 words to describe what I have heard, love and the reason why. Don't worry though, I won't do that here for information overload. After all my listening and demos, for me personally I am between choosing either the new Dynaudio Contour T2.5 or Aerial Acoustics model 8B (CC5 center, LR3 rear and SR3 surround) speakers. Both of them are on top of my list for what I like and I've heard just about every high-end brand (not all). You are correct in it's personal mainly, but then choosing one that's high-end enough for your system and budget.

Happy listening, viewing.

My FAVORITE speakers are Martin Logans. They are beautiful, unique, wonderful things. They sound pretty good too.

My other FAVORITE speakers are Atlantic Technology System 170. For the price (around $1000-1200) they just put out KILLER sound for home theater. The subwoofer in particular is awesome.

It's great to have all this great gear. But I'd instead put all that money into software (Movies) I'd have SOMETHING TO WATCH ON ALL THIS GREAT GEAR. Doh!
Thanks for all the great feedback.

Aerialman suggests that I pick the amplifier after I select the speakers. Is this the general consensus when building a new system? I have not heard the Sunfire yet, and may change my mind after a demo. I am very impressed with the Tracking Downconverter system that Carver uses. I used to think that a high power AND low heat amp was an oxymoron.
Just to add one more voice to this conversation... PF likes the Revel Salons and I am using the Revel Studios. I have listened a fair amount to the new Revel Performa line and really like it. These speakers offer most of the performance of their 3-4 times the price brethren.

The usual caveats apply in that I don't know your taste or your budget, but everyone here has suggested excellent speakers at their various price points. You will have a hard time going wrong with a well set-up system incorporating any of them. Happy hunting!

M&K ARE KING

From their cheapest range to their most expensive, they are brilliant.

Eric
for HT: JBL pro cinema speakers (3677/4645C/8340) www.jblpro.com

for hifi: JM Lab, Mission have my preferences though the JBL are so powerful and "alive", I use these for now (got a pair of Dali too). Astonishing.

For the real cinema sound, nothing beats those JBL. Absolutely nothing. But you need a large room.
My 2 cents:

I love my Revel Gems. Incredible.

If you are high on Bob Carver, there is a line of speakers which he helped design(and which reportedly come out of his shop) which are not only the clearest things I've ever heard (I own them and have been a speaker nut for 30 years) but they are very well priced due to being a proprietary product of the exclusive .com seller. Ask [email protected] They have a great return policy, so your risk is minimal. I love them. I have the 616's. I'm going to post a full review sometime soon. I'm not affiliated, just darn happy.

What do you want the speakers for? Given the other components you mentioned, I would guess home theater...What percentage HT and music? This is key information that needs to be discussed before I can make a recommendation....

I'm mostly interested in your favorite speakers for Home Theater. 99% HT, 1% music.

Q,

With those parameters I would move M&K speakers right up to the top of the list. And don't forget to check out SVS subwoofers (a relatively new company) for some very interesting LFE reproduction.

why is it the conventional wisdom that we want home theater speakers to have some personality that is different from the accurate reproduction we should expect for music. Most "music" speakers also benefit from the use of accurately equalized subwoofers for the lower two octaves, though they might not acheive the volume during music replay that soundtracks create. Either way, in music or theater, you want to hear what was recorded with as little alteration as possible (whether the alteration comes from equipment that just can't do it or the injudicious use of equalizers or digital sound processing to add your preferences to the mix). If its there you want to hear it, and as it was recorded, if its not there, you don't want to hear it. If we use high definition, flat, full spectrum, accurately dynamic, speakers with the ability to let you hear what was recorded without injecting their own personality into the mix for both music and theater, no one will be complaining. This myth that music is somehow more delicate or intricate and requires some kind of extra light touch or whatever is left over from when soundtracks weren't produced with the level of detial and quality that we see now. I think we are spending too much time trying to come up with reasons to maintian this distinction. If you want the speakers to sound different for the two application, what part of faithfull reproduction are you trying to add for one that you want to subtract for the other?
