Well, I know everyone here has an engineering background and is into hardware questions. However, to celebrate my 200th post, I'd thought I'd pose a software question to everyone. What are your top 20 must have DVD choices for the beginning home theater library?

I've only owned a front projector for the past week, so I've sort of jumped the gun here. So far I've collected the following:

Galaxy Quest, The Fifth Element, Matrix, Shakespeare in Love, T2, Dinosaur, When Harry Met Sally, Air Force One, Chicken Run, The Music Man, The Gladiator, 102 Dalmatians, Cleopatra, Singing in the Rain, In the Heat of the Night, Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, Mystic Pizza, Supernatural Live- Santana, Ben Hur, Men in Black, Camille Claudel, Maria Callas-Life and Art, X-Men, True Crime, Almost Famous, Toy Story Collection

As it turns out, I have exactly 20. So I guess that they have to be my top 20. Mind you that I mostly watch HD (which will be obvious) and have the willpower to wait for HD-DVD - in whatever decade they choose to release it. I refuse to collect three times. And now, my list...

For me: Avia, The Holy Grail, Terminator 2

For the kids: Chicken Run, Dinosaur, Tarzan, Pocahontas, Toy Story, Toy Story II, Fantasia 2000, A Bugs Life, and the Disney Collection (Mulan, Lady and the Tramp, Lion King II, 101 Dalmations, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, and Hercules)

By all means, check out Immortal Beloved. Excellent video quality and one of the best audio soundtracks on dvd ever. Wonderful classical music, and explosive sequences (check out the Napoleon battle sequence around the middle of the film (chapter??).

Enjoy!

My copy of THe Usual Suspects is letterboxed, and not anamophic. Its a great movie, but is doesn't look good when projected on the big screen. Is there a new release that is anamorphic?

Dan G,

I forgot about Titan A.E. The Ice towards the end is a great way to show off the projector, but you have to have good contrast.

Hard to name just 20 "must have" discs. Depends on what you like to watch.

But........some of the DVDs I consider must have that haven't been mentioned would be...Desperado/El Mariachi, Eagles HFO, The Wall, Roy Orb B/W, Fleetwood Mac The Dance, Talking Heads Stop Making Sense, James Bond Collections, Starship Troopers(Denise Richards-Grrrrr..), 12 Monkeys(GREAT DTS), Dances With Wolves, Eric Clapton Unplugged, James Taylor Live @ Beacon.

Can you tell I like my music DVDs? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

blu,

I've seen this question posted on ALL the seperate forums in AVS since day one, but the answer will always be different, every time. Three months from now, there will be another set of new movies that are a "must have".

I don't get it. Are our movie choices not up to snuff??

The movie isn't even out yet but I can't wait for "Driven" to hit DVD. The sound in the previews is awesome!

Also, Dinosaur and The Iron Giant are great animated flicks to own, as well as all the usuals listed above.
