What aspect ratio best fits for this wall

I'm torn on my screen size. I don't have ideal room structure, but it is what it is.

I have taped off 2 possible screen orientations. The green is a 2.35:1 and the blue is a 16:9. The visible area of these configurations is to the inside edge of the tape. The actual tape is approximately what the frame width might be as a minimum (one frame is 4" wide if I choose that one).

The ceiling where the screen is going to be is only 86" tall so I'm limited.

The screen company I am going through can only make a 150" 2.35:1 maximum which is what is taped off in green.

The blue is about the maximum I think I can fit for a 16:9, as any lower and I'd be looking through my feet, and the top of the screen is already too close to the ceiling. I know the recommendation is 9" from the ceiling and 24" from the floor, but the 16:9 (blue tape) is neither of those.

The screen will be used equally between movies and netflix, with a smattering of xbox/ps, and regular tv thrown in.

Down the road, once funds return to my bank account, if I were to choose the 2.35:1 orientation, I would buy motorized curtains to slide in and cover the empty screen areas during 16:9 content. However, due to WAF and budgets, I will have no curtains for the forseeable future.

What would you choose out of these options?

Are you planning on using CIH? If so, I'd go with the 2.35:1 screen. I would get you nearly as big of 16:9 screen.

I am planning on doing CIH. According to the screen calculator, if my 2.35:1 screen is 150" diagonal, then that has a 59" height. If I use that for a 16:9, it becomes a 120" diagonal.

Noob question, but to setup a CIH, is it just me setting the lens memory of the projector to be that 59" height for 16:9 content? I am getting everything installed tomorrow (other than the screen which I have to order still unfortunately), and until I do that, I won't have any 16:9 content to display to test with. Just curious.

No you have to set the lens memory for 16:9 and 2.35. Out of the box the projector will throw and image on the wall which will not be the right size or positioned for either. You start with the 2.35 built in test pattern get it centered on the screen with the left and right the same height. If your projector isn't centered perpendicular to the screen if you twist the projector the light path will be longer on one side and the image taller, once you have the image the same height on both sides you use lens shift to get it fitting perfectly on the screen left to right. Then you save that setting. now using the built in test pattern you can set it up for 16:9. and save. A word of caution unless Sony (you mentioned the 695 in another thread) has changed their software when you change the memory zoom setting it remembers the journey not the destination, what that means is if you fiddle with the image up-down, left-right, bigger-smaller, the software remembers all those clicks and each time you ask it to assume the position it does the same dance. Drives me nuts.


If you go with a 16:9 screen, you use the test pattern to set the image location and size once and you are done.

I've got the 2.35:1 setting the way I want, but I am not sure about the 16:9 setting. I think once I have 16:9 content to show, I will get that setup and saved (in a separate saving slot?)? I am not sure how this works yet.

I think they have improved upon it, but it's definitely not the most ideal route to say the least.
