What blanks do you use?

Currently what is the best? Don't see many Made in Japan's around anymore. I've had no problem with TDKs or Fuji Taiwans. Is it good to just buy name brand media as the sales come around?

I've been buying Taiwan Maxell's and so far they've worked very well. I test the PIE/POE errors of each burn and been quite happy with them. But there have been some reports that they degrade over time, so I'll be retesting them periodically.

I've also tried some Japanese Taiyo Yuden discs, and so far they are good, but not quite as good as the Maxells. Time will tell if they're better for the long term.
I have been using these with very few problems. I never had a bad burn so far with TDK, Sony and Panasonic.

* Fuji 8x DVD+R (Made in Taiwan) tri-color 30pk (3x10)

* Fuji 8x DVD+R silver 25pk (made in taiwan)

* Philips 8x DVD+R 25pk

* Staples 8x DVD+R 50pk

* TDK 8x DVD+R - 25pk

* Fuji 8x DVD-R (Made in Taiwan) tri-color 30pk (3x10)

* TDK 16x/8x DVD-R (made in taiwan) - disk says 16x, box says 8x - 25pk

* Office Depot 4x DVD-RW 25pk (made in taiwan)

* Sony 2x DVD-RW 25pk (made in .tw)

* TDK 2x DVD-RW 5pk in tall slim cases (Made in Taiwan)

* Panasonic 3x DVD-RAM (5pk and one included with Es20)

On my Panasonic DMR EH50, I have used the following with no problems:

JVC DVD-R (4x)

Fuji DVD-RW (2x)

Fuji DVD-RAM

Panasonic DVD-RAM

Panasonic DVD-R (4x)

For write-once, I use the Sony 8x -R's that I got on sale at Staples. These are made in Japan.

For -RW, I use the Sony 2x which are Taiwan-made.

I used MAXELL and have had no problems with any of them(-R). They are all MIJ, but I do have 3 DVD -RW's Maxell's(Made in Taiwan) and have had no problems with those either.

A little hint to people. SEARS is a GREAT place to find Maxell/MIJ's DVD-R's. They don't have such a large turnover in there recordable DVD media, so they tend to have a large number of DVD -R's/MIJ still available(In 50 spindle packs). Also at good prices.

This has been my experience, at least. I also find MIJ's still in Staples.

Walmart seems to have been completely wiped out of Maxell DVD-R/MIJ's. All of the ones near me seem to have Made in Taiwan DVD-R's now.

It never hurts to look.

Fuji DVD-R tri-colors in the 30 packs that ncaahoops mentioned above or Panasonic DVD-RAM discs. Never, ever had an error on the Fujis in too many burns to count. They go on sale someitmes for $9 for 30. Possibly the best thing is that you can use blue for one category, yellow for another, and gren for yet another. It keeps things organized.
I use only Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-R (Jpn), one of the highest quality media -- very very rarely a problem. I did use Ritek 4X & 8X a while back. Never had a problem with a burn on them or initial play back -- but now I'm finding some Ritek disks I burned a year ago are now having problems with freezes and skipping on playback.
My Walmart has Sony MIJs 50 pk for 27.99. They've been sitting there a while. Should I get those? Is .55/disc too much? The Maxells I've seen doesn't say where its made. How can I tell which is Japan?
Hmmm. I noticed that Verbatim and Memorex weren't mentioned one way or the other?

Verbatim 4X (movie reel silk screen label side) is my most trusted brand of DVD-R. I have burned over 300 and never had a failure. Everything I have read says to avoid Memorex. I had one 50-pack and I had 2 failures in 25 burned.

That's waaaayyy too much. Typically you can see where the discs are made right on the discs themselves.
These days I use Taiyo Yuden 4X and 8X exclusively. In the past I have used several other brands, but so many sources have unconditionally recommended Taiyo Yuden that I am buying them in bulk now and I don't use anything else. I figure if I expend the time to make a DVD of some program, I probably will want to keep it, and bargain basement, store brand disks are too much of a gamble. This is especially true when I can get TYs for $.35 per disk.

Where do you get them? I've run into a few sites selling TYs.

www.supermediastore.com

They are a reputable dealer of genuine Taiyo Yuden. T-Y does not sell retail packs so what you get from bulk distributers are silver top, unbranded disks in a tape-wrap (no spindle or cakebox). That's why it is important to buy from a reputable dealer.

For those who buy T-Y, supermedia store is having a great sale right now. 200 packs of 4X T-Y DVD-R for $60 with free shipping. What is most curious about this, is that the web site lists media ID's as TYG01, TYG02 & TYG03 which are 4X, 8X & 16X respectively. When I checked, there were 3 reviews posted in which the authors claimed that they paid for the 4X TYG01 disks and were sent 16X TYG03 disks -- needless to say, they were happy campers. If I didn't already have several hundred blanks in hand I would be tempted to kick out another order.

Thanks Kelson, I just placed an order for a 200-pack!
How good are the Verbatim 6X dual layer DVD+Rs? Best Buy gave me 20 of them when I bought that Plextor 740A, even though they claim the ad was a misprint. The ad stated it included 20 dual layer dvd-rs but the box only had 20 single layer DVD-Rs. 20 single layer DVD-Rs are worth about $1 - but 20 DL DVD+Rs are worth about $40.
Closer to $60 for those +R DL's. Best price I'm seeing is $28 for a 10-pack spindle.

They work fine as far as I can tell. I had one or two problems way back (over a year ago) on a Sony external PC burner, but none recently. Probably burned 40-50 of them. Verbatim is the only brand of DL's for me, either +R or -R.
