Sorry for the 'newbie' question, but I'm starting a brand new HT from scratch (about to throw out my ProScan 27"), and - at this point - this is the set up I am planning on...

- Sony HDTV model KF-60WE610

- Tech Craft Stand Model# SWE60

- DVD Player - Zenith DVB318

- Home Theater sound system - Onkyo HT-S770

- UPS / Surge Suppresor - Energizer ER HT400

ALSO - I have an existing VCR, which I would like to incorporate in the above mix as well.

So, my questions (to all of the more experienced good people) is....

what are the CABLES that I need to have/get, so I can best hook up the above?

Also, pls advise best quality brands for these cables.

NOTE: I will be on Comcast digital service for HDTV access.

Many thanks.

I am not familiar with each of your components, but chain stores like Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. like running all video cables though the receiver or audio video preamp processor (prepro). This increases their profit margins with cable sales. Specialty shops like running a source like a DVD player or HD digital cable both directly to the display. I have a variety of video cables running to my projector. Composite (RCA), S-video, component-video, and DVI. It is better to prewire, or retro all these cables for future technologies. As far as picture quality, in the order I listed, DVI is best, RCA less as good.

For audio you can choose coaxial design for digital audio, or the optical. Monster Cable says they are the same, but Kimber says coaxial is better for rejecting noise. Run good RCA interconnects for analog audio from your DVD player to your receiver or prepro. You will need six audio RCA patch cables for the 5.1 outputs.

Brand loyalty falls so much on the subjective, a personal preference. One may desire a Sony TV because his dad grew up with Sony's. Some people swear a Hummer is tougher than a Jeep. But the companies rep, longevity, and warranty offered shows confidence in consumer electronics. Choose what you like. It is your system. www.kimber.com sells some of the most expensive cables in the world. Monster Z-series is acceptable. Straight Wire is good. www.partsexpress.com sells their Dayton cables for less. They make quality cables for the price.

I would recommend using S-video from your HD cable both (not use Component-Video). And use the Component-Video patch for your display if you get a progressive scan DVD player.

Yeah, definitely use the component video hookup for your progressive scan DVD player. Anyway, I'm not particularly convinced that the really expensive Monster cables do anything better than regular cables besides lightening your wallet. They all have a 75 ohm impedance, and that should be all that you need. Check out my sig for great quality cables at a reasonable price

It must have not been inserted.
