What did you think of "City of Lost Children"?

I have to say Amelie may be the most beautifully filmed movie I've ever seen, so I rented another film by the director "City of Lost Children". I think this is quite a cinematic accomplishment. First, it is not a typical Hollywood formula movie (big points right there), the photography is stunning, the plot was fascinating.....it's just wierd. It reminded me of the Wizard of Oz in some ways.

I like this directors ideas. What do you guys think?

I liked it just fine myself. I'd buy it if it wasn't on the pricey side.
Terry Gilliam was one of the people tapped to do a blurb for COLC when it came out... there are definite similarities in style between his work and Jeunet and Caro. I'm a big fan of this movie and Delicatessen, which might even be better. As a side-note: COLC is one of the few foreign films I know of where (IMO) the english dub is actually better than the original language soundtrack.
Mark,

As FredProgGH mentions, see Delicatessen if you liked COLC.

Guys,

I'm can't find the DVD for Deli at BB or Netflix, looked recently. May have to rent the VHS. Bummer!

Last I checked, Delicatessen wasn't out on R1 DVD yet. I think it's out in R2, though, if you swing that way... I don't know how well the DVD was made (i.e. transfer, sound, etc...).

The evil Santas at the beginning of this movie are a work of utter genius!
I absolutely LOVE this movie!

I really enjoy this movie, very different and love the sets.
I did also enjoy City of Lost Children. However for me, the very best of Terry Gilliam is found in Time Bandits. I also like Brazil and Twelve Monkeys but not quite as much. However, his Monty Python stuff hasn't interested me since I was a teenager.

Hi Gary,

very interesting. I don´t like Time Bandits too much, but I love Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and COLC :)

This is a great, imaginitive movie IMO. I love the flea-cam! And at least once a month I say to someone "Silence, legume!" They usually just stare.
What is the PQ of the DVD like (either COLC or Delicatessen (the R2 release))?

-Jon
When I watched "City" last time, the PQ of the French R2 DVD was okay on my 8 foot wide screen. I also own the Delicatessen DVD, but I didn´t watch it yet.

Yours,

Philip
Philip,

I'd be quite interrested in the quality of the Delicatessen DVD. Do post in this forum if you have the time/inclination to do a quick review.

Me too- now that I have a region free drive I've been meaning to pick it up!
I saw City of Lost Children late last year in the theater. It was playing as part of a double feature with Amelie here in Los Angeles. I wasn't sure what to make of it when I left the theater. I was expecting more I guess because I loved Amelie. It was definitely interesting though and imaginitive. I think I expected more humor. I'll see it again eventually, I have a feeling I will like it better upon second viewing ...

Haven't seen Delicatessen yet.

City of Lost Children was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. They were clearly inspired by Gilliam, but Gilliam was not involved in the production.
Correct - and now I remember COLC had the feel of a French film throughout. I thought Amelie was entertaining but it did not rise above a rental for me. Delicatessen I found more bizzarre than entertaining - but intriguing enough to watch again someday and see if I "get" it. My first viewing was marred by TV commercials and TV censorship.
