What do I need? Entry-Level setup for Multiple Use

I tried looking on the forums for a similar post but couldn't find anything really related so I decided to post up.

I've done some reading and I know that the sound is purely based on, "does it sound good to me?" However, I need some guidance. I'm looking for a setup that will serve a few purposes.

I use a 28" LCD Monitor for my PC and for gaming on my PS3. Currently, I listen to music on my iPhone with a pair of Grado SR-60s which I thoroughly enjoy. However, I'd like to have a more permanent setup in my room. It's not a huge room by any means but I'd like to have a surround setup as I do like to watch movies on a regular basis.

Here's what I'd like to have surround for:
  • Music
  • Video Gaming
  • Movies/Videos
  • Occasional instrumentation stuff (SONAR, Sibelius, etc)

I'm working on a fairly tight budget splitting the cost with my brother as we both enjoy our music.

If you need a hard figure I can sit down and figure something out but I'm not looking to spend a boat load like a lot of folks here do when they mention "entry-level." I looked up a few threads with people mentioning entry-level and they're dropping close to $3000.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Even just a start with what equipment I'd need.

To give you an idea of the room, my desk is centered up against the wall. Directly behind my desk is my bed. There's a closet just to the right of the door (when entering) and a bookshelf to the right of the desk maybe 3 or 4ft away. I can draw up a rough sketch of what the room looks like just for reference as I know positioning and the room is what really plays a role in what the sound will eventually be like.

I've tried doing a lot of reading and I realize it all boils down to how it sounds to me but I still need some direction.

Thanks!

You don't need to spend $3000. Can you afford $1000? You really do need to give us a ballpark if you want useful advice. Meanwhile, take a look at this guy's blog .
$1000 is doable. I was going to say $1500. I just wanted to consult my brother to see if he was still interested.
