Okay, I'm looking at buying a pair of bass shakers. I'm pretty new to the HT game, and I don't have a clue what I would need in order to add these. Right now I have the Onkyo 605 receiver running speakers and sub. Do I need to add an amplifier? If so, what would be a good choice for a guy looking for a basic entry level one. Or, do I need something else? BTW, I'm looking at some that are on an auction that ends in the next day, so quick help would be much appreciated.

All you really need is a Y-Adapter to split the sub output signal from your Onkyo, an extra sub cable, a few feet of speaker wire, and an amp. This plate amp is an easy fit to power a pair of shakers without bottoming them out. I just added shakers to my setup with this exact amp and am getting great performance from it.

EDIT- I'm assuming that you're using Aura Bass shakers which are 4 ohms each. If it's something else you may need a different amp choice.

Here are the two parts you may not already have laying around your house.

Read my posts in that thread. Gives to control over each shaker or pair of shakers. Forget the mono sub amps IMHO.

PS I have been running shakers since college, I am now 36...so give or take 16 years in total. Few years I went with out in one apartment, but with out a doubt a 5-7 channel receiver for the shakers with a mono line run in, and the shaker receiver run in all channel mono mode is the way to go.

Noah-

How would I mount such a thing, or where would it go? I can't find a lot of info about it. Should it be mounted in-wall or something?

I keep the plate amp hidden behind my AV stand and run the speaker wire to the shakers mounted in my recliners. It's not mounted to anything but it is hidden by my other components.

I do the same. Some people mount the amp to the bottom of one of their chairs so everything is at fingers reach. I'm using a plate amp with a remote control. It gives me control of the shaker volume and low pass so I can fine tune their performance per show or game. I dont want the shakers activated by Vader's voice but I do want the space ship hum from the hitch hikers guide.
