How much do you guys expect the prices of plasmas to drop in the next 10 - 12 months on both 42" EDTV and HDTV models.

Is it realistic to expect to see the "low-end" EDTV brands for under $2000.00...maybe around $1800.00?

I could see that happening.

I've seen low end displays at around $2200 now, so $1800 isn't impossible.

It sure seems like thats where it's headed. Right now the Pannys ED unit

is hovering right over 2500, 2k is like a magical barrior, of course 3k and

4k and so on. for consumer's there is always a price point that a person says once it drops under X amount I'm going to buy it. The manufactures

know this, so they try to control this as much as possible, at the same time

you have more people buying which adds another factor, consumption.

It's also about holding on to a profitable product for as long as possible

the difference between the wholesale cost of a 42 ed and a 42 hd isn't

anywhere near what they are charging right now. The electronics inside that make the difference cost a few bucks yet they charge hundreds if not thousands more. It always boils down to supply and demand in the end.

I think $2199 is realistic within a year for the off-brand models. If it's much lower than that, I'd bet you are getting a closeout or one-off sale.

You can try looking at it like this, what were the units priced at one year ago? that percentage of price drop could possible apply to a year from now.

+ or minus a little bit.

I have found ---.nextag.com seems to show a pricing trend for products.

not sure how accurate the site is and it really depends on the model you look at. The price dropping trend seems to have leveled out though.

take it with a grain of salt.

With Panasonic and Sony announcing new plans to dramatically increase shpments and market share in the next year, I'd be willing to bet we will see prices about 70% of current for like models.

I have a personal feeling that 50" panels will available in the $4800 range by next summer.

You'll see an off brand model under $2K (for 40-42 inch size). It's just a matter of time for the $2K threshold to be crossed. Dealers are getting prices on demos and such for $2200 on 42 inch off brands. You have to see that this is just an indicator that the $2K online price is going to happen. Some e-tailer will have a $2100 price and their competition will come in at $2000 and then a counter price will come in at $1900. Just wait and see.

It would seem that with a lot of companies just having invested in DLP or LCD or both, that to lower plasma prices might not be in their best interests. So I think plasmas may stay a little high until companies are willing to lower prices on their other sets.

31% discount every 16 months on high end (50" only), 43% on 42".

Based on actual retail & sale price during 2001, 2002, 2003.

You may get a better deal or you may not.

Old models will be discounted like they are now, new models will probably be in the same price range as they currently are as evidenced by the price of many of the new models.

...but with better features.

Take for examply the Akai 4290 vs the 4294. I believe they are both the same price (or were at their time)...but the 4294 has many more features.

I still hope that it drops down in the $2000 range. :)

Price drops overall have been less over the last 9 months then they were the 9 months prior. Most of the movement has been in the 42" models. Given that off brands are already selling for $2200 in some places, I'd say sub-$2K in a year is a lock.

What will be more interesting is what happens with the 50" and 60"+ models. There's been very little movement there since this time last year. I think we'll see sub-$5K models in a year, but first I want to see some movement before I'd bank on that.

There is a current, temporary plateau in plasma prices. But it is a mistake to view it as anything more than temporary.

Capacity is coming on line in the next 6-12 months that will add the ability to build an additional 50-100K panels per month. Those will not sell at existing prices.

In a year? No, It is coming off and on now. Frys had a new hyundai 42 for 1899 after rebate, 2 weeks ago in Renton WA

Under $2K for 42 inchers and under $3K for 50 inchers:

we'll see Plasmas starting to replace direct views and RPTVs in droves!
