Not sure what you mean by backlight but my screen sits about 2' out from a wall and I have perimiter rope lights behind the screen shining on the wall. I have a DLP projecting onto a white screen. The "backlighting" enhances the black level by fooling your eyes. This trick was courtesy of this forum.
No, Markito. I do not know the answer; I was simply asking... I, too, wish somebody could shed light on this one (pun intended).
But, my scientific instinct tends to say that, if back-lighting enhances the perceived blacks by forcing your eyes to adapt to a higher level of brightness, then it may also render shadow details more difficult to be resolved by your eyes. Just my guess...
