What format is dominating releases?

I usually don't start threads and I did a quick search. I was just wondering are most releases 16x9 or 2:35 (rounding their close cousins to those formats) or are they relatively a close 50-50? Thanks.

Right now they are more 2.35:1 title than 1.85:1 one. Each film is release in their OAR ratio and thanks god for that..
Something that I've been wondering is, wouldn't 16x9 technically be a higher resolution image, since it uses more of the screen? Or do they just take the 2:35 version and crop it, making it the same resolution? Anybody know?

Technically, yes. A 16:9 full-screen image uses more pixels.

So far, the only 1.85:1/1.78:1 releases are:

Goodfellas

Full Metal Jacket

Rumor Has It

The rest are all 2.35:1.

The Fugitive and Happy Gilmore are both upcoming, and will be 1.85:1.

FWIW, I heard Unforgiven was 1.85 as well from a review in here yesterday, not true?

Thanks though with the feedback, was wondering what the plan was and it seems they are keeping theatrical dimensions in-tact and not moving most to fit 1.85.

Nope. It's scope.

Nor should they.
Probably one of the few benefits of being a niche format, not catering to the whiners that can't have 'black bars'
Daniel Boone shot a black bar on this tree, 2006.... :D

Rachael, I don't know how old you are, but I'll bet there are few of us, here, who actually remember the song about Daniel Boone who "killed him a bar, when he was only three." ;)

Edited to add: Now that I think about it, I believe it was Davy Crockett who shot that bar!
Chris,

That's because it was Davy Crocket who "killed him a bar when he was only three". (King of the wild frontier)

Allen

Edit: saw your edit

Edit2: You get a pass, because Fess Parker played both roles.

I'm old enough to remember the song. Daniel Boone really did carve that he shot a "bar" on a tree up in Kentucky not so far from here, Tennessee. I think that the tree stille stands. I've never seen his carving in person but have seen a picture of it. :)
I guess this is format based. There was talk of what resolution will be on the discs when released. Does anyone know what res is on the disc's that have be released so far? ie 1280*720 or 1920*1080?
I'd be interested to know what percentage of folks who have HD DVD have plasma/rptv versus front projection. Those that have FP what percentage have constant height.

They are all 1080p on disk.

I do! Looks AMAZING TOO! I'm using the Ruby with a 120" 2.35 screen. can hardly stay out of my Theater now.

I'm 33, but I know this song from "Back to the Future"!
