Isn't OLED one of those things that's forever "just around the corner"?

Until they can mass produce to bring down costs I'm going to ignore it. These companies are having too much success with LCD and Plasma thanks to blu-ray and the digital transition, to really be putting alot of money behind OLED. My thought is once plasma and LCDs start to even out as far as numbers go they'll start really producing some OLED's.

Yea, think OLED will be for the privileged only for a few more years.

It's a tough situation for manufacturers right now with today's economy. Plasma and LCD fill the needs for the majority of the people at a very affordable price and offer a pretty damn nice picture despite a few critics on here that constantly look for flaws rather than enjoying the benefits. Trying to introduce a panel now that would likely cost over 10k is tough. Plasma and LCD were able to slowly make the transition because they were able to offer a nice picture while also offering a huge benefit by reducing the size of the sets (RPTV) considerably and came into existence when the economy was doing pretty well. It will likely eventually happen but the economy has to improve for it to become mainstream.

OLED is actually a simpler process with less parts than LCD or PDP.

The reason these companies aren't big on OLED yet is that they have already invested millions in their LCD, PDP manufacturing plants. They want to get their money's worth out of the plants before tearing them down to produce OLEDs. It is just economics.

Once sales level off with the old tech, then you will see OLEDs start to come in. Once one company starts producing affordable and larger OLEDs they will start to grab market share then others will jump in to compete. This is when it will take off.

Right now too many feel that LCD and plasma dispite their numerous flaws are "good enough". When you realize how long VHS tape was popular you will also realize that image quality is not that important to most people.

For my bedroom, yes. 40 inches is too small for your main tv.

Why not pick up the XEL-1 for your bedroom nightstand? That should hold you over till the first 40" OLED ships in 2014!
