Guys...at least for those of you who did...lol...thanks for the support. FWIW, I happen to agree that the deletion of the thread was unnecessary. I'm not stupid...we all know this is a little bit of a grey area; but I also happen to agree that describing how to do something "suspect", at best, is not the same as advocating the act. This information is all over the Internet, and even...apparently...in our own HTPC section.
So, why even bother putting it here? For the reasons many have applauded; I tried to cover all aspects in one place, I tried to keep the language simple...I wanted to relate the process to HT guys, not just in the non-technical sense, but there are also considerations to be made when you're planning to stream to a $5,000 Pre/Pro and 140" 2.35 screen, as opposed to a $300 AVR and your parents 42" flat-screen.
I also happen to agree with the need for more communication between mods and members in situations like these. As the author, I wasn't even notified or offered an explanation. I think I can speak for all of us when I say I love the forum. I wasn't looking to break the rules or hurt the board in any way. If I stepped off the reservation, how are we supposed to know what's in-bounds and out, if no one explains why something won't fly? Only after a few days, to let things cool down, did I drop AG a PM asking why.
Bottom line is I don't blame AG; he did lock the thread, partly because it was off-topic...again, by design...but he also acknowledged a lot of work went into it (which it did), and that it relayed good information the members were interested in (which he said was what the forum was all about...agreed). So he offered (after I asked for the explanation) to have it reviewed, and my understanding is they asked "legal counsel", and he deemed it too hot to handle. Now what do you expect the lawyer to say? He's going to err on the side of caution and just choose to stay out of any sticky wicket.
What's done is done, and I'm looking into the best way to get the information out there through other means (which will likely go through my signature). Of course that doesn't mean I don't appreciate any of you who have appealed on your own. Thanks!
