Its really too bad, even though I know (or at least I can infer) why it was shut down...I guess I'll head over to the HTPC forum when the time comes, and start researching multiple threads rather than one comprehensive one.

Could this be re-created without the ripping info. Like pros and cons of using a standard computer, or NAS, or HTPC and NMT. Setting up the network. The front ends and that sort of thing? There really was some good info that wasn't against AVSforum policy.

I knew once I saw it locked it wasn't going to last very long, and I should have copied it to word, but thats ok. This is by no means a knock against AVS at all, maybe CD could get with a mod before posting something like this again.

Anyway, thanks again CD for the attempt.

Well, these have all been debated many times in various forums. The biggest issue is that it is fragmented across the boards. The other thing that might make it unique to this forum is that someone that has just dropped 10-20K or more on adding to their house or finishing a basement with a dedicated theater will not have the same viewpoint on bang for the buck as someone that is fresh out of college and thinks it is neat that he can add all this media convergence to his cinderblock supported entertainment center. (If you know what I mean.)

With that said, being involved with quite a few of the various what is the best option threads regarding network media distribution throughout the house, I usually say that the first thing you should do (after a very basic look around to see what is even possible) is to ask yourself:

What do I want to be able to do with my system?

But thats part of the problem, I don't even know whats possible. I'm remodeling my house right now, and I'm trying to run as much cabling now. I don't really what to start a thread on that yet, so I won't really post my questions here.

I think putting NMT's into rooms (that need it) over the network would be the best solution. But I need to figure out the storage part.

Part of the remodel is a dedicated HT room, that will house (in a separate area) most of the electronic gear for the house. You know kind of a central brain. I'm still working on what the "gray" matter will be.

That's just crap. I idn't see anything that violated any TOS that I know of.

[EDIT - On the advice of a well respected member of this community, I am retracting my previous remark. Apparently, this member said something that the MODS didn't agree with, and was banned from the forum for a period of time. In it's place, I'm posting the PM that I sent to Alan.

Alan:

I noticed that the thread dealing with media storage, ripping and distribution within a home network disappeared.

I know that this thread dealt with an area of digital rights that is sensitive, but I felt that the posters handled the discussion with care and were quite sensitive to the issues.

Can you tell me why the thread was removed? Also, I find it disturbing that threads randomly disappear without any explanation. You are working to build a community, and as such, I feel that there are responsibilities that go along with that. I'd like to suggest that when you feel the need to delete a thread for whatever reason, that you post some sort of notice that you have taken this action and provide the reason for it. That would go a long way towards building trust and keep the community engaged and supporting the forum.

Thank you for the attention.

Well, right now we've got a lot of options for media. Which ones do you want to have access to from just your remote control:

Blu Ray rips

DVDs rips

VHS rips (I hope not)

broadcast digital television DVR capability

cable/satellite subscription digital television DVR capability

You Tube

Netflix on demand

Hulu

(umpteen other online video streaming options)

MP3s

audiophile quality music (SACD or DVD-Audio rips)

Obviously there is a lot to talk about on the subject without even touching on "how" you get the rips from the various discs. Further, as some of the options for "corralling" all your media into one place can be quite cheap if you are willing to deal with relatively crude interfaces, and somewhat more expensive and complicated if you want to have it polished with just remote control and nice UI, I think it is perfectly valid to talk about how a person would do it within the context of a dedicated theater.

As such, i would encourage you to start a thread asking what your options are based on some general desires you want out of it (which of the above you want supported, just one room or accessible all around the house, etc.) and how "classy" you want the interface to be. At worst, we end up with just one post not asking about GG or where to put bass traps...

Geeze! It's simple - at least IMO.

This particular forum has a strict policy that forbids discussions about the how-tos of how to defeat media copy protection encryption - even if it's about how to copy stuff that you have purchased and own.

Why?

Could be because forum sponsors include owners of copy protected content.

Could be because forum owners don't want the liability of allowing discussions that advise how to violate the law (the old fair use doctrine doesn't allow copying content that the makers have intentionally tried to encrypt to make it copy protected) - I don't agree but that is the way it is and rules is rules.

Bottom Line is forum "owners" say clearly that in our web space ya cain't do this and it is, after all, their space and there are many other web spaces that find ways to be comfortable with discussions of these things.

AVS Forums rocks - I can live with the rules.

Show of hands, how many rippers have ripped a Netflix bluray?

That is why AVS can't get behind publishing this kind of information. To do so is just inviting a problem.

If you really need to know "just google it" the information is out there.

I can live with the rules too. I'd just like to see them tell us that something was beyond the TOS/taste/whatever by making a note that they deleted a thread on purpose because of X.

I've suggested that to Alan. I'd like a little transparency here.

Actually per copyright laws, if you purchase an item under copyright (i.e. music, software. etc...) You have a legal right to make one copy as a backup copy. In the case of you selling your master, you legally must destroy the copy you had made. So although, I know the inherent problem with discussing the actual methods of ripping media and circumventing the DRM imposed on it, I wouldn't see to much of a problem under those considerations.

Debating whether or not the deletion of the rip thread was necessary is pointless. What's done is done, and Big Brother can do what he likes.

I will agree with CJ though. Some form of comment/annoucement as to why such action was taken would be nice.

The thing I take issue with though is that if you head over to the HTPC part of the forum their is a how to on Blu Ray and HD DVD.

Guys...at least for those of you who did...lol...thanks for the support. FWIW, I happen to agree that the deletion of the thread was unnecessary. I'm not stupid...we all know this is a little bit of a grey area; but I also happen to agree that describing how to do something "suspect", at best, is not the same as advocating the act. This information is all over the Internet, and even...apparently...in our own HTPC section.

So, why even bother putting it here? For the reasons many have applauded; I tried to cover all aspects in one place, I tried to keep the language simple...I wanted to relate the process to HT guys, not just in the non-technical sense, but there are also considerations to be made when you're planning to stream to a $5,000 Pre/Pro and 140" 2.35 screen, as opposed to a $300 AVR and your parents 42" flat-screen.

I also happen to agree with the need for more communication between mods and members in situations like these. As the author, I wasn't even notified or offered an explanation. I think I can speak for all of us when I say I love the forum. I wasn't looking to break the rules or hurt the board in any way. If I stepped off the reservation, how are we supposed to know what's in-bounds and out, if no one explains why something won't fly? Only after a few days, to let things cool down, did I drop AG a PM asking why.

Bottom line is I don't blame AG; he did lock the thread, partly because it was off-topic...again, by design...but he also acknowledged a lot of work went into it (which it did), and that it relayed good information the members were interested in (which he said was what the forum was all about...agreed). So he offered (after I asked for the explanation) to have it reviewed, and my understanding is they asked "legal counsel", and he deemed it too hot to handle. Now what do you expect the lawyer to say? He's going to err on the side of caution and just choose to stay out of any sticky wicket.

What's done is done, and I'm looking into the best way to get the information out there through other means (which will likely go through my signature). Of course that doesn't mean I don't appreciate any of you who have appealed on your own. Thanks!
