Not to play the devils advocate here, I'm just being realistic... What will happen for all the current Mits HDTV owners if 1394 doesn't become the industry standard? What if (gulp!) HDMI (I think I've got those initals right) or DVI become the standard? Meanwhile Mits is bringing out the Promise module with 1394 on it next fall... so IF 1394 were to fall by the wayside, has anyone heard if Mits would bring out a "new" Promise module?

Mits does offer "the promise" guarantee that mentions 1394 only - that's not a real reassuring blanket statement...

IMHO, 1394 and/or USB 2.0 will be used for recording purposes. DVI with or without HDCP (HDMI) may (I stress, may) catch on as the connection from STB to monitor. Silicon Image (geeks behind HDMI) never intended HDMI to be used for recording purposes.

Personally, I'd like my HD-PVR to have sat/ant inputs with component video outputs for my monitor/projector and 1394 connections to hook my HD-DVD-RW box for archiving. Will I ever be able to purchase such a box? Only time will tell.

Stephen,

I think the forthcoming Dish STB (model 921) may fit your description. One reliable source said it has a DTVLink connection for recording. Plus, it has DVI/HDCP in case you upgrade your monitor/projector.

Mr Squid,

I originally wrote something along the lines of "don't worry, be happy." Then I read about a large number of satellite receivers coming out (particularly DirecTV) that don't have 1394 outputs at all - not even for recording. (What a horrible idea!) In the short term, at least, the Promise module and DirecTV are a not a good match.

So if I'm running component/S from my SA box from Time Warner, I should be OK - huh?
