If I use an HDMI connection between a DVD player and my Sony KDF-42WE655 and the audio is 5.1, then what do I hear thru the TV speakers? Will it be just L&R channels or will the TV downmix the 5.1 to 2 channels?

As far as I know, there are no TVs which accept 5.1 over HDMI. Of course, if they did, they should downmix it for 2 speakers. Presumably they will do that for OTA and Cable today.

Good information - I'll check my TV manual. I assumed that it would downmix the 5.1 - after all, the TV has a DD decoder.

You're correct AkaStp. The only digital input recognized by HDMI input (according to manual since I don't have the DVD player yet) is 2 channel PCM with a variety of sampling rates and word lengths.

Thanks - that gives me my answer.
