What happens when HDMI 1.4 comes out?

I guess my main question is are our receivers going to be upgradeable? I just bought a Pioneer 9040...

I read yesterday the PS3 will be upgradeable to the new spec in order to handle 3D. However I'd imagine I couldn't pass that through my receiver if it was HDMI 1.3, correct?

Problably not. But, its nothing to worry over either. You don't think for a minute they are going to get that version to work any better than the previous ones do you. HDMI 1.3a is still a problem for many companies, so I doubt very seriously that 1.4 is going to be working as it should anytime soon. When that happens it will be time to upgrade anyway.
For an AVR that has an HDMI 1.3 repeater, it will not be upgradeable to 1.4..

HDMI 1.4 AVRs will start to ship mid-year 2010, but still it will take some time for other HDMI 1.4 source and sync (display) products in late Fall but in time for Christmas biz..

Just my $0.01..

The masses will have to have either purchased future-proof displays already, or buy yet another HDTV for the latest greatest feature that their current one doesn't have.

Yes, there are a lot of people on this site who do that without a thought, but as much as AVS Forum members have contributed to getting the DOW back over 10k, I still don't think the corporate bean counters will be impressed by the showing at the registers.

All IMHO of course...
AFAIK, the only reason for more bandwidth is 3D. Here' some general info on the topic (which I have not seen confirmed by another source, but it seems right) -

HDMI 1.4 also includes ethernet over hdmi and I doubt that will be upgradable due to hardware changes required.
Ethernet over HDMI will be optional (like much of HDMI,) and will need a cable.

My feeling is that most people won't need HDMI, or even want it. Anyone who has recently upgraded their gear should find something better to spend their money on, IMO.

If you are just now in the market for new gear, and did not upgrade for the lossless "revolution" (*cough*) may be interested in holding out for a bit to see what's coming down the pipe.
