I was thinking about this the other day and thought it would be cool to list the movies that have most withstood the test of time for me. With the threshold being at least ten complete viewings, only a relative few stood out. Whether they come up on TV or I notice them in my library, something compels me to watch them over and over and over again.

Oddly, the list doesn't have a lot of my top favorites – The Lord of the Rings trilogy isn’t on there, and neither is The Dark Knight. But what is listed below (in alphabetical order) are films that are equivalent to putting on an old, comfortable pair of slippers that feels good whenever I sit down to enjoy ‘em:
  • Aliens (easily my favorite sci-fi flick)
  • Fargo (I love the performances in this film)
  • Friday (Chris Tucker still cracks me up in this comedy)
  • L.A. Confidential (a noir story based in my home city, plus some fantastic performances)
  • Miller’s Crossing (my second favorite movie of all-time; amazing dialogue)
  • Pee-Wee Herman’s Big Adventure (maybe my most watched movie because it simply makes me smile)
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark (my favorite movie of all-time)
  • Scarface (the most quotable movie ever made IMHO)
  • Tombstone (Doc Holiday alone makes this one of my favorite rewatchables)
  • The Wizard of Oz (I'd probably seen it ten times before I hit my teens)

Getting close to the 10+ threshold are Ip Man, Memento, and MP’s Quest for the Holy Grail. So, which films have you watched an absurd amount of times?

Heh, that's always an amazing side effect of rewatching your favorite movies so many times - reciting the lines as they happen.

There actually are a number of what I would say are obvious ones, so avoiding that I'll go with Blues Brothers.

The Blues Brothers are a classic in and of themselves. But the deadpan humor, car sequences and of course music just make it all work. Don't even get me started on the quotes!

okay so here's my (short) list:

Amadeus

Garde à Vue

Le Dernier Métro

La Belle et la Bête (Cocteau)

Star Wars (1977)

Monsters, inc (yeah well, it *is* one of my favorites!)

Some of my favorite movies are not there but ask me in 3 years I'm sure I'll have seen a few more at least 10 times (TDK trilogy for starters)

As with television shows, I find that good comedies make for films with the most replay value. As such, some movies that I've watched a countless number of times throughout my life include:

Spaceballs

High Anxiety

Clue

Airplane!

Beverly Hills Cop

Annie Hall

The Naked Gun

I have watched a good majority of the films mentioned above more than ten times, easily.

A few that weren't mentioned that I have watched over 10 times are:

The Maltese Falcon

The Great Escape

The Stuntman

Singin in the Rain

Network

All the President's Men

Angels with Dirty Faces

Public Enemy

8 1/2

The 400 Blows

...hell, there are just too many to mention.

Maybe not 10 COMPLETE viewings, but every time I come across one of these (in no particular order) on TV, I HAVE to watch as much of it as I possibly can:

Blazing Saddles

Young Frankenstein

Hello, Dolly!

The Music Man

Red Dawn (the original)

National Treasure

True Lies

Bringing Up Baby

A Christmas Story

The Godfather

Monty Python Holy Grail

Monty Python Life of Brian

I'm sure there are more, these came right off the top of my head.

Whoa, I thought ten was a pretty high threshold. Some of you really enjoy rewatching more films than I thought would be listed. I have a ton of 5 - 8 viewings though, so I guess it is really just a matter of time to add to the list.

My wife hates rewatching films however. She feels the time is better spent with a movie she has never seen. To me, one eternal classic is worth watching over 100 so-so flicks even if I have already seen it many times.

Sure - you can count a title . . . as long as you watched the ENTIRE movie and not just some clips from it.

I do not keep count, but I doubt I have seen any movie completely 10 times or have any desire to do so.
