I want to buy Pioneer VSX-919AH-K


I have 2 options:


Amazon $350 (Authorized Reseller)

I can save $20 by going Newegg, but what are the benefits of buying from authorized reseller?

Main benefit is you know the warranty will be honored. Pioneer, especially their Elite line, won't honor the warranty if not bought from an authorized dealer. Too me, that's worth $20.

so if I buy from newegg and it breaks within a couple of months I would be SOL? i wouldnt be able to send it to pioneer for repair?

Just spend the extra $20. If we were talking $200 difference for this model, then you would think about it. Pioneer, and many other manufacturers won't honor warranties. Odds are it won't matter but $20 makes it an easy choice. A few hundred would be different.

If it were me I would always buy from an authorized retailer/reseller. If you have ever had something break that wasn't covered due to this you would understand why you should buy from te authorized dealer.

To answer your question, yes, Pioneer could refuse to repair your receiver if you bought it from an un-authorised dealer. When you hear "comes with manufacturers warranty" often times they mean the paper work inside the box. Doesn't mean the manufacturer will honor it. Always check the brands website (or e-mail them) to make sure they are indeed authorised.


If you must buy from an u-a dealer at least consider an extended warranty from a third party. It would be better then nothing. Hopefully.

You sure? That's not actually being shipped from Buy.com, but from 1Stop Camera. They are not on Pioneer's list.


Personally, for $20 I'd go with an authorized dealer, but on more expensive gear, where I could save $100's, I have no trouble with unauthorized dealers. I've saved enough over the years to more than cover the cost of even a very pricey component. I've never had equipment fail under warranty anyways, except for some NAD gear quite some time ago. With that experience, having a warranty was really of no value anyways.

Seriously? Youre sweating $20? If the difference is really a issue maybe you shouldnt be buying at this point, but instead saving your money. Buy the authorized unit.

true. but time is money too, and the amount of time spent trying to save 20 dollars seems a bit excessive.


not to be cold, but if saving 20 dollars (in this particular case) is worth obsessing over, the op probably shouldn't be spending the money on an avr in the first place.


neither of those statements mean that i don't think you should be careful with your discretionary income and shop around.

For $20 ths shouldn't even be a question. Specifically in regards to your question...non-authorized dealers USUALLY mean NO WARRANTY. Technically they aren't even supposed to sell them, but they do. Usually, and this is in regards to my initial comment, the difference is big (20%+ between non and authorized dealers).


FYI AVS is authorized for EVERYTHING we sell (though I don't sell Pioneer).

We own the AVSForum so we cannot afford to play those kinds of games.

Jason, maybe you can answer a question. I've bought items from unauthorized dealers before, and on the box is a shipping label, direct from the manufacturer, or distributor to the business selling the item.


If manufacturers don't want them selling their product, why do they play these games? They obviously know it's for resale, individuals can't usually buy from distributors. Maybe they should just put a stop to it.

While most manufacturers like Panasnoic, Sony, Samsung etc, honor warranties regardless where you bought it from, Companies like Pioneer, Denon and a few other high end audio equ. makers are not. Their warranty card will explicitly specify that no warranty service what so ever if you bought from non-authorized dealers. So, it is brand dependent. As for OP buying a Pioneer product, I don't know why he even bother asking because Pioneer will not honor any warranty if he bought from non-authorized dealer. It's not like Pioneer product never breaks.

well... it IS a bit surprising... but...


a) they aren't listed on the pio website... which doesn't necessarily mean anything...


b) several people have posted on various sites that they have emailed pio asking if newegg was authorized, and told that they weren't...


but who knows...
