Sony has a setting called "Cinemotion" There are two settings - Auto 1 and Auto 2. When I asked what the difference was, I received the below response:

The Auto 1 Cinemotion Setting will represent original film-based content. The Auto 2 Cinemotion Setting is for Standard use and will display the improved picture with some predefined adjustments.

On Vivid setting, Auto 1 is standard. On Normal setting, Auto 2 is standard.

What does this mean in layman's terms? Which one is better?

Neither is better. Off is better. If you want the best picture quality, you do not want your tv "enhancing" anything, you want it to display the content as the producers/directors/editors want.
