Well I was looking around the net and discovered divx was a real format sold at C.City their appears to have been a few hundred movies made.


Ijust like to know what it is and if its worth getiing being most movies sell used for less then 5 bux?


What's the resoltion?, PQ?

Sound options?

What format do they us CD,DVD?

Was T2 on this format as it seems it been on everything under the sun?


My phillips DVD player (642) says it plays divx and infact my friend gave me a burnt divx movie and it played. So I'm wondering are they worth getting.



I always thought divx was just a way to create homemade movies.

I did a quick google but thiers so much diffrent info ot their.


Was CC the only place that sold the format?

I'm almost positive that the old Circuit City Divx format is not the same divx that your DVD player is referring to. The Divx that Circuit City promoted some years ago was meant to be a pay-as-you-play format. That is, you paid for a disc that would only play a limited number of times. To play it afterwards would cost more money, or you could pay some set amount to convert it to an unlimited play, but only for your own specific player.


When people talk about divx nowadays, it is in reference to a compressed format that was originally developed and named as a response to the Circuit City Divx (i.e. a means of giving the electronic equivalent of the finger to a large corporation that was promoting a format that most consumers hated). Since then, Circuit City's Divx has failed miserably, and the more underground divx algorithm has become mainstream.


In summary, I would have serious doubts, if the discs you are looking at are actually old Circuit City format Divx discs, that they would play on you player at all.

Ok the thanks I thought those movies seemed to cheep to be true, even at used.


Kinda of a stupid format then, seems like a vary wastfull product play a few times then toss how stupid.


Didn't disney do this as well but their discs stoped working within 24 hours due to air contact...

Can these discs even be played at this point with no way to phone home. Are their ways to play the discs at all at this point or are all remaining disc costers at this point.


I did a google search and found out a lot about the CC versions


-needed a divx player with modem so it could phone home to allow the play.


-each time you played it you were charged. After a certion amount of plays you could pay a fee to keep the movie. As long as it can phone home to allow it (how stupid)


Only a few studios suported it (fox), and infact they didn't go to DVD right away.


-many discs were FS and not OAR.



Makes me wonder about the new format wars it would seem fox has jumped on a side again

Well DIVX is a format that many geeks LOVE, especially computer geeks.


It can be very high quality, are just medium quality... for fun you should try one, and see how it is.

Once again, it depends on which Divx is being talked about. Circuit City's old Divx has been gone so long that I'd actually be a bit surprised to see someone selling the discs except as curiosity items. I do not believe that they would play on any player.


However, there is an abundance of video encoded in divx (non-Circuit City) format around. My assumption would be that any advertisment nowadays that referenced divx would NOT be referring to Circuit City discs. Therefore, unless there is information to the contrary, one should usually assume that divx references the widely-used encoding scheme now used, and not the old pay-as-you-play discs.


That said, divx is most often used to highly compress video for download over the Internet. At 4+ gigabytes for a DVD movie, divx provides a much smaller file size for download, usually trading quite a bit of quality in the process. Of course, high quality divx encodings can be made and burned to DVD media as well.


Be warned though, that few, if any, movies from major studios are legally encoded for sale in divx format. If someone is selling divx DVDs of movies, they have a high likelihood of being bootleg.

Yep, the CC Divx ended in 1999 and the rental place stoped in 2001. So from what I could find their no way to play them nowdays.


Darn I was hoping to have another format to play with. Much like MY used LD collection they may not look as good as DVD but their such a weird format. I shock my friends everytime I show them one. The CAV set are the best a huge box with one movie in it just great. Plus I'm the only one I know with movies other then the few on the fourms here...

the CC DIVX was an actual format that Fox and Disney supported in competition to DVD. It was a bombing failure due to the crappy pay-per-play deal. the Divx that your dvd player supports is the compression codec divx. (actually that particular player supports mpeg, divx and Xvid). Divx the compression codec is nothing but a compression style just like VC-1 and AVC and Mpeg2 are. Divx is usually used to compress and re encode a DVD or other source into a smaller file size due to larger efficiency for playback on a computer or divx compatible dvd player such as yours.

I've got the Proscan Divx Player. I'd liike to play the Divx movies that I have. Does anyone know how to crack the player to allow playback of these movies?

get one of the old 80's formats - the one that you used a record needle to playback video discs. RCA sold em: every poorman who could not afford to buy a Pioneer LD player bought one of the RCA video record players instead!! My old roomy's dad had two players in the mid 80's.


I understand they are quite the collectable now.. lol. VHS had as good picture quality - no figure.

or you can go farther back and find a reel-to-reel Sony Video Tape Recorder VTR unit (buddy of mine had a 1971 model in the 80's).

Yea, I never did get the idea of playing movies with a needle. Considering how prone musical records were to scratches, dirt, wear, having to replacing needles, etc., what was the point? What moron CEO making millions of dollars a year thought it was a good idea?


btw, I know some musical purists are needlephiles, but I'm not. I was glad to see the format replaced by CDs.

Yea, I never did get the idea of playing movies with a needle.


An old Perfect Vision talked about collecting these things. There were beaucoup discs per movie, and you could be guaranteed that at least one disc per film would not play. Therefore collectors had to keep buying them over and over to search for a complete set of playable discs. I think this was back when some titles were available in this format and no others. People were going crazy in order to get a complete Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Plus, they were paying big bucks to do so- laserdisc prices or worse.

CED was a crazy format I thought as they wore out quicker then VHS and the PQ was often worse then VHS. the only benifit I saw was no rewinding.. never got the format. I've thought about buying a few discs for cheep just for a converation piece. like for example first blood was just about on every format out.

CED,LD,Beta,VHS,VCD, DVD, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray.

I imagine Star Wars and E.T. on CED could fetch a pretty penny. I once owned Superman:The Motion Picture, Planet of the Apes and a few other goodies on CED; wish I still had them for collectability's sake. As far as those 'Divx' discs go, I wouldn't even use them as coasters.
