What distinguishes an XBR from an XS plasma model? Not with only plasmas, but Sony has XBR versions for LCDs, CRTs, and LCD RPs.

The Plasma Display Element (Glass Panel) - not to be confused with the front protective screen -

is manufactured by NEC

Sony copied Fujitsus Single chip process. It was an accelerated implementation. Quite impressive. They use similar processing for their LCD , and lcd RPTV.
