I am upgrading to a 7.1 system 100% Home theater, no music. I currently have old Vandersteen 2cis with 2 cheap Celestion surrounds. I think that the Rocket 550 / 200 will be closer to the Vandy sound (wich I like) than the 750.

Has anybody heard the Rockets 550s, 250s, 150s? Wich surround (150 or 250) comes closer to matching the 550?

I have read several reviews of the 250s that lead me to believe that the 250 is closer to the rolled off sound of the 750s ( may be even more rolled off than the 750s) than the brighter 550s. I have not been able to find much on the 150.

I may be able to work in four 550s but It would be difficult to use 550s for rear surrounds. I may try to if neither small speaker is a good match.

Thanks for the help. Sandy

You should try posting this on **********'s forum.

BTW, the 750 has recently undergone a XO change to make it sound less rolled off and therefore may now sound like the 550. I'm not sure if this effects other speakers in the line or not.

Sanchez,

I have had all of the speakers you metioned in my system. Ideally if you can get another pair of 550's in there it would be perfect. I don't know if it's a space thing or some other reason, but money wise, another pair of 550's would run pretty close to a pair of 250's with stands, which would be my second choice. The 150's don't share the same tweeter, and sound best in a smaller system. The 250's are a very good match for the 550's as surrounds, as they were designed to work together. I have had equal luck mixing and matching my Rockets.

The RS750 is the only speaker that was ever 'soft' on the top end. The RS250s are *easily* the RS550s little brother...they are very close.

Only the 750 has ungone an XO revision. The change added 1-1.5dB on the top end and we also upgraded the parts in that path.

The 550 is still comparatively brighter...

Hope that helps!

Good Question...

While I had been working on this for several months... the recent shipment JUST arrived on our docks has this change...

There will be an upgrade notification for those that are interested posted next week on our site.

The changes are centered on the high frequencies "output energy" only... the entire XO remains the same with the exception of a few parts that set level (or attenuation actually)... and the utilization of (even) higher quality parts in these critical sections...

This mod does not center on any primary frequency, but rather the level of the entire tweeter section from XO on up... (FYI)... The reports are that people that thought we were "soft" on top... just LOVE what they are hearing now... The Rocket "sonic signature" has not changed one bit (IMHO)... the slam is still there, and the dynamic contrasts are as well portrayed as before... just with an added dollop of tweeter energy...

Thanks... and all the best...

Hello Sandy...

Well known fact... I've owned and loved several iterations of the 2C"X" etc. for years... My own opinion is the RS 750 will get you the sound you are after...

I would be happy to discuss this with you further... You can e-mail me at [email protected]********** or drop me a PM with your phone number and I'll ring you up from Taipei (where I am now)... Happy to do so...

Please do let me know how we can help...

Wishing you all the very best...

8-0 You reduced the padding on the tweet!?? I find that VERY

impressive that you responded to people's reviews and made

that kind of change.

I had always assumed you were just trying to sell more

Reference 1's. ;)

I know this is generally a no-no, but when I go to a 7.1 setup I intend to take my current Def Tech BP8-B's from my front mains and add them to my other current BP8-B's in the rear to make the full rear sound stage.

When I do this I want to pick up some nicer front main speakers that can really produce some noise and pound in step with my SVS PC+ subwoofer.

I've heard a lot of good things about rocket speakers, and the 750's seem like quite a setup, and for only $1400 a pair I can't help but be interested.

Has anyone had any experience mixing these kinds of speakers, and perhaps specifically mixing them with Def Techs?

Eventually I would go all rockets all the way around, and either sell the Def Techs, or build a second smaller theater out of them, but in the meantime I'd be looking to keep them integrated into my setup.

I mixed my 550s with some Infinitys, and the results were fine. The infinitys sound thin and have low output, but very low distortion also. The 550s in the front simply overpowered the infinitys in the rear, and thus the rear sounds were truely just ambience and effects, and it worked out real well.

6 months later i bought some Rockets for the rear, and i required my daughter to accept the Infinitys in her room. She fought it, until i hooked them up, and turned on some music, and now she loves them hah

If you use your rear speakers for just ambience and effects, i suspect you could adjust their level so they do not "clash" with the front speakers.

If you use them for multi-channel audio, or use sound fields that match the rear channel output to the front (I often do this now), then you will undoubtedly notice the different sounds of the front and rear.

Hey thanks for the info.

I expect that a set of 750's with single or dual SVS PC+ subs would fill my room with music better than multi-channel stereo currently does with my much smaller BP8-B's.

I suspect I'd get by just fine until I could move to a 5.1 rocket setup :)

Thanks for all the input. Mark, I don't understand why you say that the 750 is closer to the sound of the Vandy 2ci. I allways thought that the Vandys were fairly neutral, not bright but not rolled off. I thought that the 550s would fit that description better than the 750s. What am I missing?
