i have a few AVI files (DV--uncompressed) that i've captured from a Sony DV camera thru Sonic Foundry Vegas 4 and was wondering what's the best MPEG2 encoding software to use?

i used the internal Vegas "render as" and it looks alright...i liked the speed--only took about an hour or so to do 45-50 minutes of video (AlthonXP 2600 w/ 1gb PC2700 ram).

i tried to use the old Ligos LSX 3.5 standalone client, but it didn't like the AVI--something about it not accepting the sound format.

i've tried TMPGEnc in the past, but from what i remember, it takes forever...quality was good though.

anyway, what encoders do u videophiles recommend? i would like to get the best quality possible as this is footage from my wedding/honeymoon last month.

thanks...sturmie

Sturmie, I can understand your turning here for advice (the friendlier, caring, forum) but i think you'd be more likely to get an answer (or more answers than you'd expect) if you go here for help.

@BaysideBas

thanks, but wouldn't they just recommend their own internal encoder? i don't need Vegas help, i was just wondering what people used for encoding raw video into MPEG2.

looks like DVDRHelp.com has a good FORUM for converting that i'm gonna check out...just wanted to know what u guys thought b/c this is the friendlier, caring forum :).

Because they are as likely as not to have checked other encoders and actually compared the results to the one provided with the app. As you said, raw video to mpeg, that's one of the things you do with VV.

yes, u are correct--but, from what i just read, they're coming out w/ v1.4 very soon and it's supposed to be a big improvement.

apparently, Vegas comes w/ v1.2 of the plugin and the current Main Concept version is v1.3.1--maybe this one is better than the Vegas plugin...i'm gonna try the demo tonite.

Check out www.doom9.org

Look under the guides section, similar to what's at DVDrhelp.com

CCE gets my vote for fast and good. The multipass is pretty great. I think there's even a $29 version now available.
