What is the best UPS?

283 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  tvtech1
I'm in the market for a UPS so I can still watch TV and go online if the power goes out. It's even more important now because I just got Voice Over IP and if the power goes out we lose the phone.

Please let me know what is considered to be the best.

Also, I'm new the UPSs so if there's any important information I should know please mention it.

-Also, will a UPS work right when it's plugged in or does it take a while to get charged?

-How long will it keep supplying power without any coming into it?

-I assume the more things being used on it when the powers out decreases how long it lasts. Is this true?

Thanks a ton.

I know nothing about the voice over IP. I assume it's like an internet phone. The main thing to consider id the power consumption of the equipment and the size of the UPS. The smaller the power consumption and the larger the UPS, the longer it will last. As for which are the best, I don't know. The Smart-UPS from APC are really nice units. They have backup power and voltage regulation. Most UPS units are already charged when they are sold. They are ready to use right away after the battery is connected. There are many different size UPSs so how long they last depends on what size you buy. Each manufacturer will tell you on their website how long their units should last with a given load. Measure the wattage of all the components you want connected to the UPS and then see their website for recommended UPS units. They can last anywhere from 1 minute to 3 hours depending on the size of the UPS. APC and Belkin make good units that I know of. I have one of each in our theater.

Does this one look to be what I need?

It should give me a good amount of time with power considering the very small load I would be giving it.....correct?

You'll need a generator.

The UPS you linked to will only run for a few minutes at full load.

It only has a 12V/5Ah battery in it.
