What is the biggest HD set that will fit in a 21h x 28w opening

I'll be replacing my existing RCA TV soon. While I'd like a huge set, the spouse will only allow a set which fits in the entertainment center.

The opening is 21h x 28w with an open back. I'm running all audio from the stereo, so I don't care about speakers on the set (they only take up more room).

So, who makes and what is the largest HD set that will fit in my space?

Thanks all.

The only HD tube TV that will fit is the Toshiba 26HF84. It's 27-1/2" W x 19-3/4" H x 19-1/2" D.

The Panasonic CT27HL14 comes close but is a little too tall at 27" W x 22.4" H x 19.5" D.

The Sony 27HS420 is way too wide and too tall. I don't think there are any other HD tube TV candidates that will fit.
That sounds like an old center thats made for a 27" 4:3 set. Not really big enough for a decent HD set. I'd recommend trashing it and upgrading to a stand thats open on the top, so you are not so limited in the future - thats what I did. Put your foot down, you deserve a decent sized HDTV! As the recently passed on John Vernon (Dean Wormer) said "its time for someone to put their foot down, and that foot is me!"
We presently have a 31" RCA in the space (model F31224GG); I can't even remember when it was new. It is a 4:3.

Surely there is a larger than 27" 4:3 (or 16:9) new set which will fit.

I was all for moving the armoire to the other side of the fireplace with just the electronics and putting a large screen in the corner - no go, and I'm not going to fight over a TV.

Any other suggestions?

No, there's not. TVs have grown is size over the years, mostly wider as they moved speakers from the bottom to the sides. The smallest 32" 4:3 HD TV currently available is the Panasonic CT32HXC14 that Circuit City sells but it's still way too big for your little space (their website's size specs are wrong BTW). It uses the exact same cabinet as my 2003 model which at the time was still the smallest 32" HDTV and mine measures 31.9" W x 26.3" H x 22.4" D. All the other 32" HDTVs are even bigger than this narrow cabinet Panny.

Unless you can do something about your space constraints, the Toshiba 26" widescreen is your only choice if you want an HDTV. If there's any chance that you can raise the shelf above where your TV will sit then the 27" Panny looks like it would work, but otherwise you're screwed by your old-school entertainment center which was designed for old-school TVs.

Priority One: The TV, the most $. Who cares about the entertainment center, go to Walmart. I don't want to flame, but is this for real?

When your wife is out someplace do something where it looks like something broke on that old entertainment center - they don't last forever you know!
maybe putting your foot down on something she wants next time

will make the point so you can buy a new entertainment center and reasonably sized TV

that may help her learn to compromise more
Guys, I'm not a troll - the post is real. This isn't about negotiating with my wife; it's simply about the largest set that will fit in the available space.

The armoire cost more than some used cars, so a Walmart replacement really isn't an option or the issue.

If a 27" 16:9 set is the largest that I can get to fit, then that's probably going to be the answer. It's not a good answer, but such is life.

Thanks for the help

Its just a shame that some folks spend so much on an entertainment center thats too limiting for the future. I personally would rather spend thousands on the electronics, not on wood.

Yet another HD Dream shattered by a pre-existing, pre-HD era entertainment center. Well hopefully you're able to sit really really close to the 26" screen (like 4 ft). No way to have it modified to accomodate a larger widescreen TV?
If you don't have your heart set on a CRT and your dimensions are not exactly maximums, you might be able to get by with a 30" LCD Television with removable speakers like the Syntax Olevia LT30HV . With speakers removed it is something like 28.5" wide by 21.9" tall (not sure if base is adjustable or removable). I don't think it is against forum policies to say that you can pick up one of these for around $1000. I'm sure there are other LCD's with removable speakers out there, you might want to surf around a bit and find out. Good luck!
I have a 27" sony wega 3 yr old set with speakers on the bottom, i first bought a 27" akai flat screen, when that was the rave,it wouldnt fit in my center,i now want a bigger tv, either plasma, dlp,or rptv.

I have all the electronic's on top were i can stand up and load the dvd's in my 3 dvd players,i dont like the idea of getting on my knee's to load a dvd.

I have a motorola hd 6200 hooked up as 480i and it does look pretty good.

After spending alot of time searching for a new set good ole tube actually loks the best....esp a xbr 34".

So i can understand your situation.
Bud-man, yes a tube is still the best picture; however I'm certainly not wedded to a tube. My width measurement is a maximum, though.

The Syntex set, however, seems to have gotten foul reviews from what I can find. Given that I'm not going to fit a 65" plasma in the space, the cost really isn't a factor (screens small enough to fit in my space aren't going to cost $7K ).

Okay, sorry, now maybe a solution.

How about a thin flat screen mounted on a low pedastel on top the EC? You could split the wiring, keep the RCA as a type of PIP in the total viewing experience. Maybe a bit of a difficult viewing angle for the new set (got a recliner?), but might keep the wifey happy. I feel your pain bro. When I got my HDTV, it cost me a new bedroom set. When I got my SVS, it cost me a new electric range.

I've heard of WAF (Wife Approval Factor). I dunno if there is an acronym for "Spousal Matching Fund", if not, you might want to try SMF!

BTW- Wifey just LOVES the Soap channel on the Sony. Could be leverage for upgrading other components!
