With lamp set to High, as received:

Iris off, 1400

Iris 1, 930

Iris 2, 560

Calibrated to D65:

Iris 2, 488

WOW! Had no idea this thing was so dim. That isn't any better than the HX2 is it?

Looks like if you want true HD resolution, lots of lumens but great CR, it is three chip DLP or nothing.

The dCinema 2k units will certainly give you true HD @ 2048x1080. lots of lumens at >10,000, and good CR ~ 1,500:1. Of course they are > $100k!

William

what calibrated on/off CR are you seeing at the various iris settings?

Wm,

I'm assuming that when you say as received ,you mean a new PJ ? If some of the posts are accurate ,as W.Mayer has stated ,for example, there is a 40% drop in lamp output in a few hundred hours. This leaves only something like 290 lumens after a few hundred hours in high CR. Can this be true ? Perhaps we can see pre-aged 2kw bulbs used instead.

If you are a person who wants much lower ft-lamberts for movies than for sports with the lights on (or other things), then the Qualia provides something the HX2 doesn't. However, this is all part of why I have said in the past that I can understand why some would choose a 3 chip DLP, even with a large screen.

With high contrast lenses, they even go up to 2800:1 CR.

From which companies? What is the associated lightoutput loss

I know the 1k (1280x1024) models had a HC option with a 20% CR improvement with a major lumen loss!

I know NEC & Digital Projection offer the HC lens with their 3 chips. Looking into the lens I see an iris mid way that really closes off the aperture at least 50% or more.
I've wondered if there were an iris on the QX1 (custom perhaps) what the CR could be brought up to. It outputs 15fL on a 20' wide 1.0 gain screen what could it do with a 12' wide screen stopped way down.

The Runco demo at CEDIA with their prototype three chip DLP did 75fL on a 12' wide screen.

The barco DP-100 goes up to 2700 and the Christie Roadie up to 2800, although probably at D-Cinema color setting, not D65.

The light loss must be bewteen 50% and 60%, which leaves plenty when you start with 25000 Lumens!
There was a thread posted here recently about an improvement to CRT technology using new thin film materials that produced -

1) much longer tube life

2) higher light output

3) even better contrast

4) even better resolution

5) lower cost

I think some dismissed that development too soon considering the weaknesses of micro-display technology. I would rather have 9" super-tubes than a dim old, bulb killing Qualia any day.

And for that reason it would have a great chance if it came out today. A year or more from now could be a different story.

Especially since a lamp upgrade and / or dynamic iris is hardly a revolutionary technological advance for one off these LCOS projectors to adopt.

Well, you know what they say.....'Wish in one hand, and $hit in the other'.

One technology is here and one is not. Improvements are sooooo slow.
Off topic Jeff ,but I just had the chance to read your letter in WSR, at least Gary acknowledged the problem even though his answer seemed to side step it as it went along. What was that email address you gave again ?:D

There was a rather recent post indicating that lamp aging was not so severe with his Qualia , do you remember that post? Are there more indications that lamp aging with Qualia is nothing but normal.

If you want the "laser" crt you talk about that is under development. I will hook up a real laser to a Qualia or a HD2k. None of the products exist but your dream product is likely a lot cheaper to realize.
