What is the most astonishing looking movie or tv show with a projector?

My friend and I did a mini shoot out of my JVC X790 and his Epson 5050(both projectors throw an awesome image). The 3 movies that looked incredible IMO were Aquaman, the latest 4k remaster of The Fifth Element and Pacific Rim Uprising.

On a side not he did tell me days later he watched Transformers age of extinction and said it was his favorite so far.

I watched John Wick 3 last night and it was amazing. The HDR colors popped everywhere and the soundtrack with bullets flying everywhere and a lot of scenes in the rain were off the chart.

I am probably biased (HDR doesn't do 'it' for me), but Avatar in 3D is my vote.

For contrast and sharpness = Lucy

For color = GOTG2

Agree with the above, the PQ during John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is jaw-dropping in places. In fact, all three John Wick films look incredible in 4K HDR.


In terms of TV shows, Altered Carbon is probably the best I've seen on my projector (again, 4K HDR).

I want to second the recommendation for Fifth Element (for showing off color, not as a movie); it used to be a standard in this forum for comparing projectors. Also Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, for similar reasons. Almost any Luc Besson movie, even going back to the Big Blue, will be full of striking colors that can show off a good projector.

ANY movie with large scale spectacles/structures, flyover/flyby establishing shots (especially mountain ranges, sky scrapers, etc. and the like). This usually boils down to any good action/adventure movies I guess.

Nothing shows off 'large' movie scenes better than a projector with a 100"+ screen at least until wallpaper displays are a cheap thing.

Even without anamorphic lens, widescreen movies still retain a good amount of their image height: larger than any 75", 80" or 85" display currently, allowing the movie to still be "larger than life".

Even with inexpensive 4K projectors, you can set closer to the screen without seeing pixel structure AND seeing more detail which also adds to the precipitation of a larger than life movie experience. Besides new profit opportunities, the whole point of 4K and 8K is to allow larger and larger image sizes without having to move your seating back while still providing an even clearer, sharper movie experience.

I think Oblivion is a rather nice overall package that has the visuals to go along with some rather impressive audio.

+1 to Blade Runner 2049 having some stunning visuals. Ghost in The Shell and Ex Machina have some stunning visuals also.

Fury can be pretty impressive also.

I use the first 5 minutes of Oblivion as a demo. The flashback is striking, then the launch of the vehicle with atmos effects, and finally the bass shaking of the title sequence. Really nice. Used it to show my wife how the new setup was working, and we just didn't get up... watched the whole movie.

I would also add Thor: Ragnarok to the list. Lots of great scenes with sharp detail and intense colors. There are a few fades to black that look phenomenal with a JVC. I usually prefer the 3d version of films, but because I have seen this one so many times in 4k I have not been able to sit through the 3d version.

The recent 4K re-release of 2001 A Space Odyssey is one of the best experiences I’ve had with my projector. A 4K projector and high quality film transfers go together like peanut butter and jelly.

My current short list of 4K Blu-ray demo and review material:

I'd put 2001, especially the lunar transit sequence of the 2001 4K BD right near the top of the list.

The 4K re-release of 2001 makes it clear to me that more classic films need to see release on 4K Blu-ray. The Alien 4K release is no slouch either but, then, the Blu-ray was already quite good.

Interstellar is a reference disc for sure. For that matter so is Dark Knight / Dark Knight Rises. Have not seen Dunkirk yet.

I’m ashamed to say I have not seen Valerian... I’m a fan of Luc Besson but simply haven’t gotten around to it yet.

The Valerian 4K BD is the poster child for WCG. Turn the lights off, engage your WCG filter and enjoy the show! We watched it at a cinema when it came out, and I don't think I'd ever seen that wide of a gamut before. Aquaman is filmed in a similar fashion.

We just watched the 4K BDs of Batman (1989) and Close Encounters (1977) and both were just like watching them on film, for the first time - Ditto for The Big Lebowski. We'll work our way up to Dark Knight in due course. I hope to get a 4K BD of War of the Worlds (1953) at some point.

I wanted to get "Lawrence of Arabia" and found a 4K BD but it was insanely expensive.
