what is the point of a separate HDTV reciver?

Why do they sell them? Now a days they have dtv/dish network/directv boxes with them built in. Why did they sell them in the first place? How are they connected to? Did you need a source that outputs rgb? The reason why i'm asking is because i went to best buy and i saw that they're still selling these goddam things for liek 500 dollars(the standalone, not the directv reciever)
