Sorry for the stupid question but I have seen this term in reference to a hardware setting for radeon cards and have no idea what it is. I tried a search and did not come up with anything conclusive.

Thanks in advance.

I am curious about this myself. I have noticed that when someone does talk about it windows XP is also mentioned. I will have to run a search for it on the microsoft website.

AFAIK its a video mode that allows the video stream to be rendered to your video card's framebuffer directly rather than using overlays. VMR has been around at least since DX7(hence the other references to VMR7 I think) but haven't been very usable or useful till VMR9, which is included in DX9.

I may be wrong though so someone in the know feel free to correct me.

If I'm not wrong, many video software players have an "Overlay" mode. To my knowledge, as long as you don't select overlay mode, you're in VMR mode, depending on which DX version you're using.

Again, please feel free to correct me as I might be wrong.
