I own the PLV-60, along with a Panny RP-91 and Stewart Grayhawk. I am very, *very* happy with this package, and the image is just astounding.
There are three basic issues some people have with the PLV-60, and here are my $.02:
1) dust blobs - yes, I did have two dust blobs with a new unit and while the 3 year parts/labor/shipping included Sanyo warranty would have covered it, I came across this site
http://www.blarg.net/~anderson/plv60.htm
and decided to do it myself. It was so simple, and the projector is so well put together and accessible, I would not consider sending the unit to Sanyo if dust blobs pop up now and again (after the cleaning there have been no probs)
2) Solarization - this has been a much discussed topic at TheBigPicturedvd.com's Sanyo forum and my take on it is - much if not all of this problem is inherent in the source material. This is one of those subjective things that one can debate 'til the cows come home. All I know, is after tweaking the normal settings (not even delving into the service menu), I can only notice slight banding in gritty, low contrast, sub-par dvd transfers. And here's the key for me - I checked these instances with my other dvd player plugged into a 27 inch Sony TV and these artifacts are noticeable there as well. Also, some have stated they do not see the banding artifact on HDTV sources, but again, all this has been debated back and forth.
All I can tell you, is I've seen the Sony 10HT, and various DLP and LCD projectors and the PLV-60 has been the best image for the price by far to my eyes, especially combined with a Panny RP-91 and Stewart Grayhawk. I haven't seen the Sanyo 21N, and some have said it's a better picture than the PLV-60, but 16:9 panels were a must for me, and the mechanical lens shift feature was very helpful.
3) screen door - some say it's more pronounced than the Sanyo 21N, but again, the PLV-60 and the Sony 10HT (and upcoming 11HT - has anyone even seen a pre-release model or final specs?) are the only native 16:9 LCD projector in town and the Sanyo blows the 10HT away, in my opinion. At 10 feet with a 92" Grayhawk screen, I cannot see the screen door unless I'm crossing my eyes and squinting
