On my TV, I have a Y, Pb, Pr RCA inputs and my Sony DVD has the outputs. I read the manual which does not say much about this so I plugged my DVD into it and the picture looks like crap. I played around with all the settings on the TV and didn't help any. So I just switched back to the S-VIDEO plug and looks much better now.

Any thoughts as to what this is for and why it looks like crap?

What is the model of your set?

Is your set HD Ready?

Y, Pb, Pr are COMPONENT inputs.

If your DVD is progressive 480p capable but your set isn't you would get bad results. See if there is a setting on the DVD for progressive on/off. Also, all 3 component cables should be exactly the same, 75 Ohm and the same length.

Component connections should give the best possible picture, certainly better than S-Video.
