I know that Sony is only going to be releasing two CRT's this year, both of which being HDTV's. But does anyone know what screen sizes, and most importantly, will they be a step in quality or another step down. For instance, going from the XBR960 to the 970 was a step down, so will they take another step down, or a step back up? Any info would be appreciated?

A step up is unlikely to say the least. Considering that they showed no CRTs at CES I'm doubting this rumor that there will be two new models.
I hope not. I'm going to get one last CRT while you can still get them, but I was hoping I could get one better than the 970. I'm almost tempted to wait and find a deal on a refurbished or slightly used 960 since they're so much better. It's truly sad to me that CRT's are all but gone.

I think Sony only said they will have two widesceen models this year, not two "new" widescreen models.
If they do release another Super Fine Pitch tube then I will buy two and store them.

What I don't understand is that they(including Sony) haven't filled the price gap where the CRT's were. I can get a 30" 1080i CRT for about $500, If I'm lucky, I can find a 1366 x 768 30" LCD for $600. I'm in the market for a new 24-32" TV, and from a price point CRT's are it. What good is eliminating CRT's, if I have to pay more for the same size LCD?

I was going to start a new thread, but this thread is almost along the same lines of what I wanted to ask.
With the current superbowl sales and xmas gift cards I have, I was going to pull the trigger on a 970. Any reason not to do it now and wait? Like others have said, I doubt Sony's new tubes, if there are any, will be any more superior, maybe just a feature or two that you don't really need, if that.
So, buy now or wait?

I think that I'm falling victim to all the market hype. I'll likely be moving in the next couple months to a 60" SXRD 1080p set from my 34" XBR960. I'm not going to get rid of my HDCRT though, I definitely plan on giving it to my brother and then taking it back when I have a house that can fit two HD sets. The contrast levels are just soooo good.

Considering how many people here drool at the thought of being able to get an XBR960 ( Including me. ) it amazes me that Sony was having such a hard time selling them that they felt they needed to discontinue SFPT sets altogether.
They just don't make a profit on them. They cost a fortune to build, they take space away on the manufacturing floor that could be used to make smaller LCD's, and they cost a fortune to ship. Yes, people you and I drool over them, but most of us are married and have our wives to think about. They don't want us spending our money on things like tv's, let alone a HUGE brick that you can't move and to them doesn't look decorative. Most men will take the compromise and get their nice, big, fancy, tv, but one that is more decorative, can be moved, and is smaller. THESE are the reasons why CRT's are dying out.

Both hubby and I are very fond of our old 35" Mitsu SD tv in the oak cabinet that sits in our living room. We are still awaiting a visit from the repair guy who apparently prefers working on "todays technology".
I can tell you that when we were out looking at tvs last weekend the salespeople didnt even bother with us as we were browsing the CRT section (and we know how small that is nowadays eh?)
I have been reading through this forum for several weeks now just to get an idea of what is out there for CRT's just in case we have to get another. I know many would say we should get rid of the old dinosaur but the picture is still beautiful and clear after all these years.
I cant believe all the people that were in Best Buy in their Magnolia Home Theatre Gimmick ordering those huge tv's with the god awful picture. Some folks were watching a concert on one of those plasmas and I pointed out loudly to hubby just how crappy the picture really was but I guess some folks like pixalation(?) and blacks that are grey.
Sorry to rant but I am just sick and tired of reading about LCDs and plasmas. This is one wife that likes her tvs big & heavy

You all DO know Sony's CRT manufacturing cost a fortune? It's more expensive to make a
FD Trinitron HDTV than a Sony SXRD HDTV? That is why they discontinue fast on CRT models
and not LCD, 3LCD, or SXRD.

Oh sure I totally understand that the bottem line is profit. I just never thought CRT's would be pushed out of the marketplace this quickly.
