Hi - I run "serviio" on my Windows 7 PC, and via this can stream video from my NAS disk to my TV.

I'd like to have a "dedicated media center" machine though, instead of using my PC. What sort of hardware and OS should I be looking for? I'd like to keep serviio, as it seems to fulfil my needs, and I'd like a machine that basically runs 24/7 - so relatively economical and quiet would be a plus.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

You mean media server to run Serviio.

Serviio runs on a few commercial NAS the best supported version is the Synology version so I would get one of their NAS. However these NAS cannot transcode content so if your TV DLNA media player only supports a limited number of media types Serviio on the NAS will be useless.

Go into Serviio control panel on your PC and disable transcoding, then try playing your media as you would on the TV, that is what it will be like on the NAS, if no problems appear then it's all good.
