Any Monitor that does either 1080i or 720p is HDTV compatible, then it's up to you to choose a compatible STB. Most HDTV Monitors are capable of 1080i, with a few being 720p compatible and a few being compatible with both.

Generally, HDTV Monitors will also do 480p (EDTV) and 480i (SDTV).

All things being equal, 480p is a better looking format than 480i, because it has more resolution. However, it can depend on the specific program material, and it's possible a high quality 480i program can look better than a poorly made 480p program.
