What rear surround for "couch against the back wall" setup?

2164 Views 18 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  marius
I currently have Rocket RS series front speakers (550 & bigfoot) and for my rear I have some older Rock Solid speakers (B&W engineered).

I'll soon be moving to a house that will force me to sit against the rear wall and I'm worried about my rear channel performance. I'm used to my rear speakers being about four feet behind me.

I could probably afford a budget of $200-$300 for rear speakers, if there is anything that would give me MUCH better performance than my current rock solids. Their sound is great and I'm happy with them.... so I guess I'm just checking to see if there is anything that is ENGINEERED to work for my upcoming application. Is there anything thats made specifically to work with a couch up against the wall?

This pic is NOT of my setup, but it is what my current rear speakers look like (except mine are black):

Give yourself 8-10" behind the couch, make a couple small pedestals (like maybe 1' high), and lay your surround on them on their BACK firing straight up. This is about the best you can get when you have to be right against a wall.

I am teling you, that si what I do and it sounds GREAT. Can certainly notice the difference vs. 5.1 with my surrounds either behind or to the sides.

My couch is about 1.5-2' from back wall, have my JBL N24s about 4-5' apart, almost level with top of couch firing up.

Calibrated with MCACC on my 1014 and even my 7 year old cracks up when I play some jungle demos or the THX demo where te little guy is zipping all aorund to fix the THX logo. Can clearly him him behind when he drops his tools.

Bringing couch out a 1' or so is DEF. the way to go.

I couldn't be happier with the options I have right now

It certainly helps 'disguise' where things are coming from. When they're right over your head in the ceiling or almost at your sides, to me it's very distracting as I can tell exactly where it's coming from (and it's NOT from the right place.)
I am having this same dilemma and I am glad to see this thread. Thanks for the great info.
i tried the firing the speakers up setup and could still detect the localization. i ended up getting a pair of AR-S1 surrounds by Athena and mounted them 3ft above my listening position...sounded better to me that way

I have the same front speakers plus the 550s for the rear surround. The couches were up against the wall but I angled them forward by 18 inches to put the speakers there. You should at least consider the RS150, RS250 or the RSS300 for timbre matching with the front speakers. Those are slightly above your budget, but as a previous customer you might be able to get a good deal on the 150 that would be slightly above $300.

P.S. This thread probably fits better in the speaker forum.

Oops, thats why I couldn't find it sooner. I was in the wrong forum when I posted it.

How do you like your 1014 with the Rockets? I'm considering this matchup.

Guys, there is some good info in here. I don't like the idea of bringing my couch out by a foot, but may have to consider it.

It doesn't bother me that my couch is currently four feet from the back wall but for some reason, having it just a foot from the back wall would bother me.

Will look at those athenas.

I am using the Rocket 550s with a B&K Ref20 and Parasound amps. Someone else is using different speakers with the Pioneer 1014 receiver. You might check the AV123 forum to find someone with that combo. I have seen that receiver mentioned over there.

Thanks Brian, I'd forgotten about that forum. I'll see if my membership still stands, and ask about it there. :)
Thought I'd bring this thread back up again, since I might be mounting the rear channels tonight.

The update is that my new couch is very tall. The backrest comes up just slightly over my head, maybe by an inch or two. So I'm thinking my speakers MUST be mounted on the wall above my head, or the ceiling.

bkzoller, I wound up getting an RX-V1500 receiver.

Thanks

That's pretty much the problem I'm facing with my current room layout. The back of my recliner a few inches taller than my head, so any speakers on the floor would be blocked. Did you get the RSS300s? I'm glad you found the receiver you wanted.

My couch was against the back wall. I moved it out 1 ft, stuck a sofa table (the long narrow kind) in there against the wall, and put my rear speakers flat on their back firing up on the sofa table. Nice thing about the sofa table is that it covers the entire length of the couch so you can put other decorative items there, pictures frames, etc. between the speakers.

Yup, that is the thing to do!
I have the same situation, sofa against the back wall. I went with bipole rears mounted about six feet up on each side of the sofa and they worked better than I hoped.
I am also in the same situation and was satisfied with 5.1 until I start reading forums like this... You folks that mount them up high to you angle them down or let them fire straight out? My couch is also up against the back wall but there is also a large window above the couch. I was thinking about setting something up ontop of the Valance since it is pretty stout and about 6-8" wide. I have dipoles (Rocket 300's) on the sides now. What would you put in back? Another set of dipoles or regular front firing and tilt them down a bit? Thanks
Bump... hoping to get some help here guys..

You could try omnipolar speakers such as Omnisats. Not sure how well they will work.
