Most importantly, what do we expect to be there ?

Apparently, there will be plenty of non-CRT RPTVs,

both DLP and Lcos (?) based. I don't really care -

my 2YO Mits still has plenty of juice left in it (knock on the wood).

Give me recording capability ! But thanks to MPAA, it

is unlikely we will have anything. The CE manufacturers

have been ready to deliver this for 2 years by now ... this is truly sad. Panasonic tried and was immediately forced into submission by _certain forces_ http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

Even if they do roll out new HD VCRs - we will immediately have input/output problems.

Firewire is the only choice as far as input goes.

Analog output are the only output I will buy.

There are no DTV/Dish STBs with Firewire output and I am

not sure there ever will be any, with both companies having recently bowed to their true master, MPAA, and signing up

for HDCP DVI.

My only hope lies with Mits, who seems to have taken a very strong anti-DVI stance, and definitely has a Firewire-enabled VCR ready to go. Combine this is with the "Promise" module and one can record HDTV ! Alas, OTA only ...

The 16x9time sounded offly promising and very doable - most of us know it turned out to be an utmost fiasco and scam.

I have my own take on it - I do sincerely beleive they got a call from MPAA and ***t their pants. Doesn't take too much for a skilled lawyer (or anybody else, for that matter) to show how wonderful DMCA law, that was adopted while the country was sound asleep, when applied to 16x9 or any other intrusive recording solution, would result in 20Y sentences for the offenders...

Truly wonderful times we are living in.

So - any other ideas on the subj ? It's been 2Y since I finished my HD setup - it is time to treat myself to a new piece of gear this coming Xmas ! But once again, it doesn't look too promising, does it ?

Actually I don't think it's this bad.

September should bring us 2 HD VCR's, one form Mistsubishi with firewire in and out, and one from JVC with firewire in, out and analog component out. There are also DVD recorders coming out from Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony and few more. These of course are not HD but they sure beat any VCR.

I know that Panasonic DVD Recorder is coming out in October and J and R has it listed for $799 on their website. It records DVD-R discs and DVD-RAM. It may have firewire input but this is not for sure since Japanese version out this month does not have it. Pioneer and Sony record DVD-R and DVD-RW. I highly recommend Panasonic because of its use of DVD-RAM. You cna record upto 12 hrs on one 9.4 GB disc and it allows editing on the fly. For example you can delete the whole footbal game and just keep the touchdowns and record again in recovered space. It also has Time Slip feature which allows you to watch a program from the beginning while it is still recording. DVD-R works exactly like CD-R and DVD-RW works just like CD-RW so you cannot record anything unless you erase the whole disc.

Here is the link to info on Panasonic DVD recorder http://www.prodcat.panasonic.com/sho...odelNo=DMR-E20

Pioneer recorder list price is $2499 and Sony is not known yet.

Yes, but the fact remains.

It's a HD toy!

I'm not sure if Maden Football will be HD. I know it will be widescreen though. So I'm assuming why not 1080i? It's also hard to say what will be in HD, won't know until I buy!

Mitsubishi announced a single chip HDTV decoder for $24. Sampling now and volume deliveries soon. When this is build into units the price should fall rapidly. It also reportedly has vastly improved 8VSB reception.

Actually, I believe Echostar (Dish) said that they chose DVI for a display interface because it allowed easier on-screen displays. However, they also said that they support 1394 as a recording interface. "support" and "will ship a product with" are two different things, but I think there's cause for hope.
