I am new to home theater, and am in the process of setting up a 7.1 system. The room is about 23' x 23' x 9' (bad shape, but I can't do anything about it; I'm converting a garage into a rec room/HT area). I will be listening to ~70% music (mostly rock with some classical, jazz, and acoustic thrown in), and ~30% movies. I have Infinity Alpha 50s/Alpha Center in the front, Magnepan MGM-Ws in the back, and NXG NX-PRO103C in-ceiling speakers for surrounds.

I could use some advice on what size subwoofer I will need to fill a room this size, and any recommendations on models in that size. I'd like to keep it under $1000 US if at all possible (the less the better). The Velodyne website suggests one of their 18" subs, but they're just a tad out of my price range. Thanks very much!

Hi, I have a similar size room... very odd shaped. I ended up with dual subs to compensate for the room size... it worked out very well.

2 smaller subs (12" or 15") may work better for your room. Someone else in here might be able to give you some sub recommendations.

Two Outlaw LFM-1 s come in at $1000.

There are several arguments for using two subs, not least of which is to smooth out room issues. You seem to be aware of the difficulties presented by square rooms. Two subs will make that easier to deal with.
