What Sound Card To Get? HT Omega Striker, AuzenTech XPlosion 7.1, Chaintech AV-710

Hi All,

After spending over a year on my HTPC work in progress (thanks to a bad hdmi connector on my 1st video card) I'm finally getting close to wrapping it up and using it as soon as my preordered Onkyo 605 arrives.

The last thing I'd like to add unless the onboard sound is good enough is a sound card. I've read a lot of good reviews on the HT Omega Striker, the AuzenTech XPlosion 7.1 and the Chaintech AV-710.

All 3 are in my price range and I was hoping some of you with experience with any of these could give me your suggestions. The more reviews and specs I read the more confusing it gets.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated

I would probably go with the HT Omega Striker, but also consider the Diamond XtremeSound XS71DDL at geeks[dot]com.
If this is strictly for movies your onboard sound is perfectly fine.

I am taking a chance on the auzentech with upgraded opamps. Seems like alot of people here are raving about it and is a great price (price does not matter to me either).

Just be careful if you plug a coax cable into it's connector or you may find the connector in your hand.

I have an AV-710 and it works great for sending Audio/Video via SPDIF to my Denon receiver. I mainly use it for movies, TV, etc.

I've played around with the "bit-perfect" stuff (i.e., ASIO4ALL, etc) when listening to stereo recordings and found that I really can't tell a difference, so... bottom line... this $25 sound card is all I need right now.
Either the HT Omega Striker

or

the HT Omega CLARO plus+

I would suggest the X-Meridian in analog mode to your recevier. This would give better sound then going digital in most cases. The XM has greatd DAC's compared to alot of DAC's used for the digital input on alot of receviers. These cards are getting high praise around here. I own one and have never heard a better sounding card.
Hey, ROBSCIX,

I am curious as to your comment regarding the analog quality of the X-Meridian. Do you think it would rival the analog output stage of my Denon 3805?

I think I am too lazy to hook up all those cables. The SPDIF is so easy

Probably 75% movies and 25% music.

I'd also like to be able to play some 5.1 dts upmix audio files that I have and am anxious to here. The htpc will be hooked up to an Onkyo 605 receiver as soon as it gets here.

Thanks,

Keith
