Half true at best. The 161 and the VC-10 are simply not in the same area code as the 701s. I had them, and have heard the 701s and 901s, as well as 2- and 301s. IMO, 701 and 901 are decent, while the 201 and 301 were not. 161 and VC-10 have to be a couple of the poorest sounding speakers I've heard.
If you like the 701s, keep them. It will be difficult to properly match a center though. If not, any of the brands recommended would be at least as good. None of them will be worse.
Yes, the general consensus from people who have really heard most of the 01's is the same as your observation, and I would agree also.
Here we have an OP who has 701's, has posted two or three threads regarding upgrading 701 with a budget that won't get him better than 701, equal at best. He still insists in people telling him to change, like many here that probably just heard Bose and went ballistic.
In my perception the OP just wants to change the 701's to whatever people tell him he can get in his budget range, and he is looking for more people to say "go ahead and change", so he can feel better spending his budget, that would otherwise serve better if he waited until he had $400.00 - $500.00 more and get something that will be a big difference from Bose. Betas and Acoustech are not much of a change.
Does the OP want to go for
"at least as good", or he wants to go much better than the 701's???? Only him can answer that question.
