I've always read < 50' 16ga, 50-100' 14ga and over 100' 12ga but that's fairly close and I doubt anyone could tell the difference between those lengths or more for that matter. I always use 14ga anyway and forget about it as I know I don't have any runs over 100' and the price difference between 16 and 14ga is minimal.
