Hello everyone,

I'm contemplating the thought of purchasing my first plasma TV.  One minor concern is they tend to have static buzz noise when the screen turns bright.  I'm mostly considering the Samsung F8500 anyway - which I've heard reports is not as noisy as the Panasonics.

My biggest concern is the issue with Image Retention.  In visiting the stores, I often see clear evidence of some severe image retention problems.  For example, Paul's TV loops a marketed video on all TV's (even the non LG plasmas) that showcase the bright LG logo in the bottom-right corner.  10-12 hours a day.  7 days a week.  When I visited the store, it was shockingly easy to see whenever the screen turned to a brighter hue.

At first, that was a MAJOR turn-off for me, but so far all the reports I've read from home theater enthusiasts say that image retention really isn't an issue (and rarely happens).  But I've also read the opposite... with feedback stating even after properly breaking in their plasma for 100-200 hours their TV's can exhibit image retention after just a few hours of gameplay (i.e., PS3 or Xbox360).  One person mentioned seeing some image retention after going through the menu system for 15-20 minutes!  Seriously?  15 minutes of a static image is ALL that is needed?

My main gripe is that I would rather not go through constant maintenance routines weekly of washing out the screens.  I'm seriously leaning towards getting an LED lcd TV even though I strongly believe the plasma is a better choice for me picture-wise. As I said before, I have never owned a plasma set and am hoping this community can help me make the best decision.  A new TV set is a huge purchase, and we all can appreciate the importance of making the right choice to help prevent buyer's remorse.

So my question to all of you plasma experts...

- Is there a consensus on realistic guidelines one can expect to experience Image Retention?

- Even worse, how long do you think the same static image would take to experience permanent Burn In?

I have read this issue was solved for the most part, but still possible with mis-use.

- So what is mis-use?  12 hours?  8-9 hours?  Are these time frames extended if the TV is broken in properly?

- What is the consensus of static buzz noise with the Samsung F8500 vs. the Panasonic ZT & VT models?

- Regarding these issues, is it possible the Samsung F8500 might be slightly better with any of these concerns?

Thanks in advance for your kind help!  I'm on the verge of purchasing a TV very shortly, and I'm hoping honest feedback can help me feel confident in purchasing a plasma (or perhaps feel a little better about staying away from plasma).

About the only new plasma you can find is a Samsung. Panasonics are gone. Plasmas and LCDs have their own unique problems/pluses. You want a perfect image? Cut out and hang a National Geographic magazine photo on your wall.

No tv technology is perfect

plasma are intended to be tvs lcd are not . plasma are bright enough to be a realistic lcd are super bright not realistic.

and im a hard core gamer 98% of my time is gaming .

i have a 2007 panasonic plasma . Keep in mind that i ran full screen content the first 2 weeks .

the point to running full screen content is to age the pixels evenly. its recommended not mandatory.

get a samung plasma i recently got a 60" about 2 weeks ago. Picture quality is excellent and so is the price for the size.

$8xx at costco.

time frame is 200 hrs which is about 2 weeks worth. and lcd has a host of issues other then picture quality. input lag on lcd regardless of its l.e.d it is slower then plasma . so bestbuy or says use 120 or 240 htz which brings more problems rater then fixing the problem .

off axis viewing angles blooming issues sample and hold . etc

and on plasma lets say you left your movie paused overnight say 12 hrs . then it will take 12 hrs aprox to remove that static image. this is based on the users that had image retention.

myself i did had image retention with a logo channel i grabbed a dvd 1:85:1 and i watched it , never saw that logo again.

the buzzing i never heard any buzz i have pioneer elite pro-111 plasma i have panasonic px75u plasma and i have a new 60 inch plasma samsung

no buzz on none of the sets.

There is so much variation with IR and this statement cannot even be considered even remotely true. Every instance and every individual TV will vary widely on getting and removing IR. The TV settings that one chooses will also have an effect on the severity of it. You can get IT after watching 3 hours of something and it can take 2 days or even longer sometimes to clear it up. Then you could watch something for another 3 hours and not get a single ounce of it. Then you could get IR that can go away immediatley.

People have gotten IR that can last for months and that is not because they ran the logo for months before that.

Also, each brand and model then each individual TV within the same model will all vary and act differently with IR.

I was in the same situation as you are a couple of months ago. Never own a plasma and at the time have three small size lcd (2x 32" and 40"). Move into a bigger house and needed something bigger. Start of with a 60" samsung 6300 series lcd from costco after thanksgiving, that tv was garbage, blooming and flashlight in all corners, return in a week. Got the LG LA8600, 2013 top of the line for brand new really cheap ($1200, still going for 2000+), now this tv was a lil better than sammy 6300 as far as flashlight and blooming, pq is not all that impressive. Black is not that great for high end lcd. Very nice looking though, super thin bezel and wifey really loved it. Horizontal viewing angle is nice on the IPS display but vertical angle is terrible, my tv have to be higher than eye level, above fireplace due to a dedicated cut out from the house. Wife was pissed when I returned the LG, found a great deal on a brand new 60vt60 from brandsmart $1647 otd, beat every clearance deal locally due to tax. Was paranoid about all the con's of plasma and was very cautious when I received the 60vt, mostly concern of IR problem. First my 60vt have a june build but fan noise is not at all bother me, even when silent. Buzz noise on this 60vt is only if all I do is run bright slides all day. Nomal content is not noticeable from 7-10 ft out with audio as low as 10. Ran D-nice slides for the first 100 hours straight. once completed 100 hours I then put in his custom settings. After that thats when I saw my first IR, not bad by any means but a "RETURN" ir in the bottom left corner, from when I enter menu screen while inputing picture settings. Right away I panic and continue to run slides overnight. The IR disappear when checking it in the morning. So after im being real careful of not staying in the menu screen for a long time. But here's where things a change. After 300+ hours, we begin to use it a lot. Wife watches her criminal minds on ion (man that channel is scary static logo pluse top and bottom bars), I watches the Olympics on nbc, also have static logo, espn nba basketball and kid's channels, all with static logo. Keep checking for it in slides and screen wipe and never ever again I see an IR, THAT'S RIGHT, now im not paranoid anymore. Now at 400+ hours not a single IR. One thing I make sure to turn on is the pixel orbitter. Only time I leave on auto is when running slides. Sorry for the long story but hope you get my point. Sorry hard to reply from mobile phone app tapatalk, hehe.

I get SLIGHT IR on my f8500 after 3-4 hours of using it as a computer monitor.

so far I have not been able to produce IR under any other circumstance. scope movies, 4:3 movies, score tickers, etc haven't had any affect. but I tend to watch a lot of different things, not CNN for 8hrs a day, haha.

there is really no consensus on anything right now, but imo:

-there is buzzing on all plasmas, almost always this comes down to the users sensitivity. if you've had a plasma in the past without issues, the f8500 should be no different

-abuse is basically leaving the tv paused when you aren't using it. it's not this crazy fragile device that requires you to stretch all content to full screen, all the time. but it is wise to vary content as much as possible. and of course, the more full screen content the better. imo, the most important thing is to flip to full screen(either by changing what you're watching, or stretching the image, or running a screen wipe) when you first start to see IR. at this point it shouldn't take much to remove and then you can carry on with your normal use. if you ignore it however, it will just get worse and worse over time. after 6months of not preventing IR, it can certainly be annoyingly obvious.

I use my f8500 for scope movies, computer monitor, cable, and video games. but pretty evenly, if not slightly more cable(which is full screen usually). if you do a lot of scope movies, or a lot of the same video game, you may need to run screen wipes. tough to say for sure
