Hello everyone,
I'm contemplating the thought of purchasing my first plasma TV. One minor concern is they tend to have static buzz noise when the screen turns bright. I'm mostly considering the Samsung F8500 anyway - which I've heard reports is not as noisy as the Panasonics.
My biggest concern is the issue with Image Retention. In visiting the stores, I often see clear evidence of some severe image retention problems. For example, Paul's TV loops a marketed video on all TV's (even the non LG plasmas) that showcase the bright LG logo in the bottom-right corner. 10-12 hours a day. 7 days a week. When I visited the store, it was shockingly easy to see whenever the screen turned to a brighter hue.
At first, that was a MAJOR turn-off for me, but so far all the reports I've read from home theater enthusiasts say that image retention really isn't an issue (and rarely happens). But I've also read the opposite... with feedback stating even after properly breaking in their plasma for 100-200 hours their TV's can exhibit image retention after just a few hours of gameplay (i.e., PS3 or Xbox360). One person mentioned seeing some image retention after going through the menu system for 15-20 minutes! Seriously? 15 minutes of a static image is ALL that is needed?
My main gripe is that I would rather not go through constant maintenance routines weekly of washing out the screens. I'm seriously leaning towards getting an LED lcd TV even though I strongly believe the plasma is a better choice for me picture-wise. As I said before, I have never owned a plasma set and am hoping this community can help me make the best decision. A new TV set is a huge purchase, and we all can appreciate the importance of making the right choice to help prevent buyer's remorse.
So my question to all of you plasma experts...
- Is there a consensus on realistic guidelines one can expect to experience Image Retention?
- Even worse, how long do you think the same static image would take to experience permanent Burn In?
I have read this issue was solved for the most part, but still possible with mis-use.
- So what is mis-use? 12 hours? 8-9 hours? Are these time frames extended if the TV is broken in properly?
- What is the consensus of static buzz noise with the Samsung F8500 vs. the Panasonic ZT & VT models?
- Regarding these issues, is it possible the Samsung F8500 might be slightly better with any of these concerns?
Thanks in advance for your kind help! I'm on the verge of purchasing a TV very shortly, and I'm hoping honest feedback can help me feel confident in purchasing a plasma (or perhaps feel a little better about staying away from plasma).
