What to look/check for in a used Sony hdtv?

I am hoping to find either a 36xs955 or a 40xbr800, and I would like to know what some common issues might be that I should be on the lookout for. I looked at one 955 last night, but in widescreen mode there was a very noticeable dip in the upper right portion of the letterbox. It was quite distracting. Is this a common problem, and is it fixable by someone who has never played around with a tv's service menu?

Should I also be looking at the previous owner's brightness and contrast settings? Am I right in assuming that too high of settings will shorten the life of the tube?

Is there anything else I should be looking for? I would appreciate any help you guys could give me. TIA.

I would avoid sets with severe bowing of horizontal lines near the left and right screen edges. That is the one problem that is unfixable with service menu adjustments.
