I have an opportunity to take a look at several used JVC G10U's. I'm interested in buying one of them for HT use. I'd like to take the best of the litter, but don't know exactly what to look for.

My understanding of DILAs is that they are nowhere near their full potential until they've been properly calibrated with Dilard and/or had quarter wave plates adjusted. Without calibrating all of these pjs, are there any quick tests I should/could do to sort out the good from "not so good".

I'll be replacing the bulb, after purchasing the right DILA, with a new 500w Cermax, as my understanding is that all of the PJs have 700+ hours on them and would like to start with the best possible image.

I have a laptop and RP56 player availabe to test with.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jp,

Off the top of my head

Dead pixels:

Stuck on pixels will remain lit when you project a full black screen. Easy to spot. (hard to ignore)

Stuck off pixels can be hard to find, but can be quickly noted by projecting a full white screen. Dead pixels will show up as, well, non-white areas.

More specifically, you can project full fields of green, red and blue and try to find black pixels that should be lit. It's not easy or quick, 1024x1360 pixels for all three panels. Even if you find some, they're not necessarily deal killers.

Color Uniformity:

Project a full white screen. Perfect uniformity is unlikely. Try to find one with the least green/red shift.

Convergence:

See how close the pixels line up and if they're any blurriness or blobs of discoloration. Dust can cause issues that can distract if clustered together. Others may disagree, but dust problems tend to be minor.

Bulb life:

See how many clicks it takes to light up. Any more than three could be a sign of problems to come.

Happy shopping!

At first get a test dvd for looking at all the mentioned before.

Before turning on a unit for testing have allok at the following points.

have alook around - the lense will be clean, all connections are okay and hav a good looking, the housing have a good look, put out the lamp and have a look inside - dusty than forget this unit, than test the unit.

Hear at the fan noise - will it sound alsways in the same way or will be there some differences than forget this unit,

Use laptop and RP56 player with different formats for doing all the test with the testpictures for the points, mentioned above. This will take time, but it will help you in decision to buy or not

Thanks for the advice. I've ordered a copy of AVIA to test with and will look for everything mentioned.

If this doesn't pan out, I'll be ordering a Epson TW100 when the "Golden Week" is over.
