*willing to increase budget a little(xtra hundred or two) if it can snag me some better gear.

I'm currently debating whether I should go the 2 floorstander's route or a 2 bookshelf/sub route. I'm not gonna compromise even more than I already am by doing the whole 5.1 with my limited budget. I'm currently living in an apt. but will be moving into a house soon (so room dimensions are a no go) with hopefully a moderate sized living room. I mostly play HD movies and games(360 n PS3) and usually keep the volume at normal levels but crank it on occasion.

So I guess my main Q is for the best sound quality for my situation what setup should I go with taking future upgrades into account(but being able to enjoy it now)? Also I have no idea what cables I need, I was thinking just regular speaker cable(except for a possible sub)?

Btw here's what I'm using now... Samsung HT - DM150

check out the Polk RTi8's at frys.com Even with shipping they are a super deal. get a center channel and a sub and start out with a 3.1 system. You can add surrounds when it is convenient.
Unclepauly should go out and break some kneecaps to get a little extra money to get a really nice 3.1 system. About $1000.
Consequently there are quite a few people that owe me money. I may just be able to scrounge up an extra hundred or two.

I recently bought a Onkyo 705, and auditioned quite a few bookshelves in this range.

I finally settled on Usher s-520s, (retail for ~400)and couldn't be happier. They are great looking, and very natural sounding. Best matched with a sub, espcailly for HT, but sound great full range as well.

Read up some reviews do some listening, and see what works best for you.

I'd also recommend Ascend Acoustics 170SE, they are little large, but the soundstage is great.

my .02.

That is a good deal compared to other e-tailers I've seen. How do these compare to the JBL stadium 8" tower speakers? I seen them at BB for $250/piece. Also next to those were the Klipsch f-2 and f-3 towers. Didn't get to listen though.

@jwc13ac - I'm checking out those usher's right now.

Oh yeah, back to my original question. At my price range what would give a more natural sound? I would think that towers have better mid-range but the bookshelfs would have better highs? Or am I totally off base?

Ok I go to order the RTi8's and fry's says only one speaker per household. WHO BUYS 1 SPEAKER AT A TIME?(unless it's a center or a sub) Do you think I should just go ahead and try to make 2 separate orders? I really don't wanna miss out!
Well I've got one speaker on the way hooray for me. and I guess I'm talking to myself also. Well never mind my questions I had earlier. I found some info over at S and V in the step by step area. Thanks anyways and delete this godforsaken thread.

They did that the other day, and they told me to just make 2 orders, but then the 1 per household thing gone the next day. So contact them an ask if you wanna order the 2nd, i ordered my paid the other day and should be in tomorrow.
Sweet I'll call them in the morning and what they can do.
Assuming the possibility of two certain considerations:

-having enough height below tv for a bookshelf

-enough space behind you for one rear speaker (6.1)

I have been telling folks to consider 3 pairs of identical bookshelves. You will get:

-superior off-axis response from the center channel than 99% of "dedicated centers"

-6.1

-and, hey, for less money!

Now, Im not going to tell you whether to blow it all on one pair or not. That's a judgment call for you to make. I think it could be very dependent on just how important 2-ch stereo is. Two ideas could be, for example:

3 pairs of PSB Image B15 for $660 at Saturday Audio. (savings of $450).

Or, on a more restricted budget, 3 pairs of KRK ST6 from Guitar Center for $300. (50% savings).

Whaddya think?
