I am aiming to own both an HD DVD player and a BD player by this fall, but I recently read something about the Blu-Ray format being finalized (?) in October, which would lead to newer disks being unplayable on current players. I am not 100% sure this is exactly what I read, but is there something happening in October that's at all similar to this? Is it best to wait until after October to buy a BD player? Please fill me in. Thanks.

Yeah, but I'm looking for a few specifics when I buy a BD player. The biggest thing I'm looking for is a player that has analog outputs because my receiver does not have HDMI. The 5.1 analogs are the only way I can achieve lossless sound. As far as I know, PS3s aren't capable of outputting 5.1 analogs.

You are correct on the analog output.

Unless you wanted to get a new receiver to go along with it.

You know, I still am a little unsure of this big change that is going to be happening after 10/31; what exactly will cause the newer disks to be unplayable on current BD players, or is this true at all? I would like to buy a BD player ASAP, but this one issue is holding me off.

As far as we know at this point some features on new discs after 10/31 may not work on non 1.1 players.

The movie should always play.

What will happen in October?

Blu-ray will further its sales lead, narrow the price gap of stand alone players, increase its number of high quality exclusive titles, and make HD DVD more and more obsolete.

That is unless Universal makes HD DVD obsolete before then.

Thats what I did...I bought the PS3 way back, when they first came out...knowing when a full featured BD stand alone came out I would sell my PS3 and purchase the stand alone. But I feel a full featured BD player won't be out until 2008. So the wait continues. Actually rather have a multi format player if it was full featured. Hopefully in 2008. At this time I wouldn't buy a BD stand alone.

Wait until after CES 2008 that's what I am doing...hopefully there will be a full featured player.

The best options right now for BR is a PS3. Any of the Toshiba players will be fine for HD DVD.

After October?

1. Nothing fundamental is going to happen to improve the picture quality. Such improvements as we will see in the future will be due to slightly better chips, processing, etc., and not anything in the spec being improved.

2. The new lossless sound formats will be completely supported, but this will in practice not make that much of a difference. Current PCM soundtracks on many Blu-ray disks are excellent.

The changes will all be to interactive features, internet connections, etc.

My point: I don't think that delaying to wait for these features is much warranted.

There are better reasons to wait (probably the largest being the remaining uncertainty about the outcome of the format war itself). I am telling my friends that I think it is a 70% chance that Blu-ray will win but no one I have told that to has gone out and bought a player on that basis, so waiting for the format war to be over is very popular in my group anyway.

Thanks for all the insight on what to expect everyone. Personally, the special features of DVDs are part of what makes them worth buying for me. I could just record movies from HBO-HD or some other HD channel if all I wanted was the movie itself. If the current players will not support the BD spec that will come after October (although I see someone posted that the BDP-1200 might...will look into that one), I would much rather wait. I wouldn't want to own a disk that I don't have full access to.

They said the same thing with CD and DVD and both formats got a million times better as the mastering, encoding and AD/DAs got better. The same will be true here even if not to that extreme degree.

I'd be peeved if I was one of the 25 people who bought a BD standalone.....

You may find yourself being pissed about the PS3 as well. Only time will tell.

Im not sure why I should be peeved. My player has played fine since October and will continue to do so with out problem for a long time. There is no reason why it should suddenly just stop playing my BD discs therefore I would have no reason to be peeved.
