Band of Brothers series is also very good. That will keep you occupied for 10+ hours ;). I didn't get Thin Red Line myself, but did enjoy the other two.

I'm going to kill the first one to suggest Pearl Harbor :p. Wind Talkers as well was pretty meh.

Instead I'd suggest Shindler's List and Das Boot.

If you're not a stranger to animation Grave of the Fireflies is really good. Be sure to get the collector's edition as that's remastered compared to the original release. Oh, and have a hanky close by :). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095327/

Band of Brothers - If I could keep only 1 DVD in my collection this would be it. Reading the book beforehand will help fill in some of the background information.

Saving Private Ryan - My favorite until BoB came along

The Longest Day - An excellent older film. Doesn't have the modern hi-tech effects, but it is an excellent narrative with an all-star cast

Battle of Britain - Surprisingly good film. One of the producers was a co-founder of the James Bond franchise.

Where Eagles Dare - Good adaptation of the Alistair MacLean novel starring Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton. Plenty of intrigue and action in this one.

The Great Escape - Another classic with an all-star cast.

I didn't care for either The Thin Red Line or Windtalkers. TTRL was just too weird for me and Windtalkers had very little to do with the Navajo codetalkers that the premise was based on.

The Dirty Dozen is also outstanding :). Lee Marvin!

Jim, I enjoyed the book but having read it after the series I was very surprised at how DIFFERENT it is. The emphasis is a lot different, and little incidents in the book become big ones in the series and vice versa.

I'd like to 4th (5th maybe? :)) the suggestion for Band of Brothers. It's by far the premier World War 2 movie, and the fact that it's all true makes it even more touching, and compelling. Great performances by everyone involved, and as far as HT goes, it's got tremendous picture quality and a great LFE track.

Depends on what your looking for. Some recommendations are pure entertainment (Dirty Dozen) or realistic snapshot of what war and that one in particular was like (Thin Red Line). No film can ever capture the scope and breadth of WWII.

My top suggestions would be.

Band of Brothers and Where Eagles Dare.

They are quite different since one is more like a documentary (BoB) and Where Eagles Dare is an action/matiné movie.

Others that I've found to be pretty good.

Kelly's Heroes

Dirty Dozen

The guns of Navarone.

Memphis Belle

Saving Private Ryan

Das Boot

I would also like to recommend the "mini"-series The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. TWoW scored 8.3 and WaR 7.9 on IMDB, I think that speaks for itself. They are a bit expensive to buy though.

Big Red One - WW1 + WW2. :D

Since you didn't really say whether you wanted a war movie or movies with storylines that occur during WW2....

Empire Of The Sun

Oooh, Empire of the Sun is a good suggestion. Some overtones of WWII, but it's not the dominant story.

I'd kind of recommend U571, especially the DTheater version, but it doesn't help knowing how badly they mangled the real story ;)

I'd recommend Band of Brothers, Pvt Ryan, and Bridge Over the River Kwai (just to throw in one that deals with the Pacific conflict indirectly).

IMO, The Thin Red Line was a huge piece of crap. That movie just Stunk. The screenplay is filled with all manner of grandiose pontificating about absolutely nothing. The writers were working so hard to be deep. That movie is an example to me that Hollywood has plenty of shallow people who try to hoodwink the general public that they are intellectuals. I really didn't like that movie. Great visuals and awesome cinematography, however.

For a bit different take, try one of the old movies made during WWII. Destination Tokyo is a great example, and I'd also strongly recommend Mrs. Miniver. These were great examples of films made to help the war effort.

The Disney Treasures series Walt Disney on the Front Lines is also extremely interesting.

Oscar i agree with you I like Tora Tora Tora much better than the love story in a suposedly all action film. Destination Tokyo(copperfin) and The Dam Busters with Michael Redgrave is good also. One of you asked what i was looking for, it has to be real story based, that's why I don't go for comedy in the World War 2 movies.

Quote "ADU Angels Dance Upward" unquote, a good cast based on the captured short weather code (shark) as seen in the ending credits of U-571, nice to see Kate acting seriously with scotsman Dougray Scott and the John Barry score I recognised immediately from 1980 Raise The Titanic R2 DVD. Please continue movies from the great world war can be facinating and educational if based on somewhat true facts.

Costco has been selling two packs of Fox War Classics for 12.99.

I picked up most of these which include pretty good stuff.

Watch "The Enemy Below",a Robert Mitchum Curt Jergens classic, and a few like it.

Very entertaining to me.
