I have 2 UST projectors on my short list, the yet to be released Optoma P1 Cinemax or the tried and true Viewsonic LS820 which has been out for awhile now and is 1080p and has HDMI 1.4.
I can get the Viewsonic for about $1800 and the Optoma is $3000.
My viewing distance is on average 13-15 feet and on a 120 inch UST screen.
The Viewsonic is obviously cheaper and brighter at 3500 lumens vs 3000 on the Optoma. I have a Shield TV and a Pioneer VSX 1523 which has 4k passthrough but it is HDMI 1.4 as well. I don't own any UHD media, but do have a lot of BD and obviously can stream 4k content via the Shield.
Is the Optoma worth the extra $1200? I don't need the built in Smarts or speaker bar.
Is the 4k shifting of the Optoma going to be a noticeable improvement over the 1080p?
I'm leaning towards pocketing the extra cash and waiting a few years for true 4k UST's to come down in price.
Change my mind.
