I've always wondered...what's the contrast ratio for just your plain old direct view TV...you know, that old 27 inch Sony Trinitron the kids watch? And do you think digital pjs will ever come close? Thanks

Regular TV's are around 160-250:1 best around 300:1 and poor gray scale les than 16 steps probably 5-10. I can get more info on Monday.

A direct view CRT in controlled conditions and correctly calibrated can achieve an on/off contrast ratio of in excess of 10000:1 per a fairly recent SMPTE article. That is what allows CRT's to look so good when rendering low APL images.

Thanks guys (no pun intended). Another tidbit of knowledge I can now pull out to pass on to my video-challenged friends! Guess it'll be a while before digital pjs catch up to 10,000:1!
