why does some receiver models have the word "REC" ? what does it means ?

Sometimes REC is short for record. Could indicate a a receiver with a record out. But I am just guessing from the limited info you gave.

Likely is related to RECord as in when using a cassette deck (eg. "REC" on the Onkyo remote). It could also be referring to the Record Out analog jack that is used when taping sources.

I'm guessing the "rec" button is conspicuously close to the "play" button...

I think it stands for RECreation. When you press it the fun level of your receiver dramatically increases. Enjoy!
